I have always locked myself in my room to read and I am trying to instill the same love of books in my two little girls.

Two hundred pages into the story, and I was still waiting for something to happen.

  • The Thirteenth Tale

The story had potential; however, she did not do it justice. The author went into to much detail on things that really did not need to be explained to such a full extent. The Thirteenth Tale would have worked better as a novela or a short story. Setterfield was unsuccessful in trying to emulate those Victorian authors that she kept mentioning within the context of her own story.

This was a wonderfully told tale about unlikely friends. The narration is believable and endearing.

  • Teaching Grammar in Context

I thought it would give me more ideas on how to approach grammar. In reality, it was one of those boring college textbooks one is required to read in teacher prep classes that are more about theory than anything truly useful. Blah.

  • The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

I am never disappointed by Sherman Alexie. He has been one of my favorites since I picked up The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven nine years ago. His newest novel made me laugh and cry; nothing less would be expected of Alexie. As for all those folks that want to ban this book from high school reading lists- grow up. He mentions masturbation twice (all boys talk about, joke about, and masturbate in high school. Don't pretend they don't). And the characters do call each other ''faggot" every so often, but most high school boys do (gay and straight). Later on in the story, Junior, the main character, explains that Indians view gay people as special, because they embody both the male and female; something that is revered in Native American Culture. Alexie is truthful and can realistically portray growing up on the fringe. He sees the world crystal clear and this comes out in his writing. I cannot wait for his next novel.

I couldn't stand the main character- he made my stomach turn. However, I can see why a lot of people I know like Bukowski. He has this no-nonsense, self-degredation thing that seem to really add some spice to the life of an alcoholic. Bukowski is not for me, but that doesn't mean that you will feel the same way. Note: He is a misogynist.

Finally, a YA writer that writes from the P.O.V. of a teenaged boy that is realistic. I enjoyed every minute of this novel.

This is like two stories in one thanks to all of the asides provided by the footnotes. Green is a strong character writer. His view of the world is entertaining.

Green's voice sucks the reader in and does not let him/her go until the end, leaving him/her begging for more. I loved this story. The characters are dynamic and it keeps the reader guessing.
