One of my favourite Dickens' novels, first read for A levels. The imagery in this is amazing- the fog and the mud at the start (mirroring the density of the Chancery system), and the wonderfully named Mr Krook, and Miss Flight, flitting around with her birds. The are wonderful contrasts between the fashionable and the outcast, the beautiful and the ugly, the powerful and the victims. On one hand a clear attack on an uncaring society, on another it is a mystery (Esther's family) and then again it is a murder mystery as well, with a chase to boot.

Make sure you read the full version (1,000+ pages)- it is worth it.

This was given to me by a friend who I studied with at King Alfred's, Winchester. Whenever I read the book, it reminds me of the UK, and our hours studying for our degree. I keep this book in the toilet and love picking it up and reading a quick poem whenever I have time. It has all the ones that you will recognise from school, with a great selection of Victorian poets to keep me happy. My Favourites: Dylan Thomas' "Do not go gently into that good night" and Stevie Smith's "Waving, not drowning"..

I am a huge fan of Dick Francis, and this is just one of the books that I would recommend. This one follows the story of Sid Halley, ex Champion jockey. You should actually read Odds against first, but they are all so good, you can actually read in any order and follow the plot.
