Hey there! My name is Ali and I like to read. A lot. Given that I'm the demographic for it, I love YA and Juvenile fiction, but I keep a few "grown-up" books on my shelf to avoid too much teasing from my college friends. I'm especially fond of books with fantasy elements - magic, the supernatural, etc. If you're interested, feel free to drop me... more »

    Hi Ali,
I just loved the Help! It's one of my absolute fave books eva and I can't wait for the movie! I hope we get it though. With hardly any movie theatres left after the quakes, we're just getting them on dvd ages later :( At least we got Harry Potter, which I loved!
So far I've only read the first of the Hunger Games series, (so no spoilers please!!!!!), but it's actually my b'day today and my boys gave me the other 2 along with my gym membership! Can't wait to read them. Time Traveller's Wife was such a great one, but I couldn't bring myself to see the movie - didn't want it ruined. Sorry, I didn't like Fearful Symmetry but glad you're enjoying it :)
We're away on Thursday for 4 days to Dunedin. (My 15-yr-old is competing in the South Island Figure Skating Competitions - soooooo proud of him!)
Really nice to hear from you again. Busy is always good, but I get restless without a book to read! Doncha just loooove shelfari?!
Hey, I see you're reading Shadow of the Wind as well? I tried it ages back, but couldn't get into it (I have no patience, though). Do you think I should try again?

    Hi Ali,
No, it's not odd at all that you'd post such a kind message! Thanks so much for thinking of us.
We were very fortunate that our house is still standing despite a bit of damage, but more than that our family is intact. I think the death toll stands at somewhere round 168, though I've stopped watching. It's been tough on my boys, especially on Paddy, who was on a bus in the city when a church collapsed right by them, and it was quick thinking of the bus driver that got them back to school safely (he just put his foot down without a stop, basically!)
Life as we knew it has changed a bit with so much destruction, but we have to all just go with the flow for now. Paddy went back to school today after 2 weeks off and Liam goes back to High School on Monday. His school are sharing facilities with another school which was seriously damaged, so Liam will do the early shift (7am-1pm) and the other school will come in in busloads to use Liam's school's facilities from 1pm until 7pm. Quite an adjustment for these seniors!
What's new with you these days? Any great reads I might want to try?
Hey, thanks again for being so sweet. I enjoy our chats so not weird at all!

    Hey Ali,
I didn't know Water For Elephants was an upcoming movie, but my friends all did. (Where have I been - living under a rock? Right?!) Anyway, I haven't read the book, though I've picked it up enough times in the shop - must read it! Thanks for the recommendation. I'm into Greg Iles in a big way these days after one of my shelfari friends recommended the Penn Cage series. They're thrillers. I have stages with thrillers and hadn't really touched any in a while, so I'm really enjoying them! If you're keen, the first one is called The Quiet Game.

    Hi Ali,
Been a while! I see you have Among the Hidden on your shelf. What did you think? I saw it on Starlett's shelf and have found it on other friends' shelves too. Was it a holocaust book? I can't remember.

Hey Ali, I see you have read Shiver. And Private Peaceful, too. Isn't Michael Morpurgo fantastic?! If you liked Private Peaceful, read The War Horse. Might make you cry if you're like me! I loved another animal story - maybe middle fiction from memory - called Cracker by Cynthia Kadohata, about service dogs (one in particular) in Vietnam. Bawled my eyes out so that I looked bug eyed the next day!

    Hi Ali,
It's been a while, I know. I remember a while back we were talking about shiver and Linger. Did you get round to reading Linger in the end? I just started it yesterday and at first I thought I was going to love it, but got up to about chapter nine and binned it. It was just terminally boring with life's little details (making meals, having coffee etc). I'm not known for my patience, but I got restless. I know you need a certain amount of those details for the reader to put themselves in the scene, but I couldn't see it advancing the story at all. Talk about disappointing! Now I'm reading Pink by Lili Wilkinson. This is what I call "fluff" but it's escapism at its best. maybe it will end up having some kind of profound message (the character is gay and struggling to fit in everywhere in her life), but I don't see it coming. I'd like a serious read next. Any ideas? What are you reading these days?
    Fiona :)
Hey, have you read Tomorrow When the War Began by John Marsden? He's an Australian author, and the movie has just come out. It was made on a tiny budget, but so far critics are loving it. I thought the book was great! It's a series, but I haven't read further than the 1st one. (YA novel)

    Hi Ali,
If you do start to read some crime, I've found a good place to start with the likes of Karin Slughter (or Patricia Cornwell) is with www.fantasticfiction.co.uk. With these two authors, at least, some are stand alone titles and some are series. If it's a series, each book could be read alone - a separate case - but the lives of the characters develop with each consecutive book, so it pays to read them in order to get maximum enjoyment. With Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta series, I found they got a bit stale with recent titles, but the early ones were fantastic, and great forensic detail! (Only my opinion, of course!)

Hi Ali, I read Perfect Match first, but I don't think the order really matters. I loved My Sister's Keeper and Plain-something....Truth? Don't know what she was high on when she wrote Tenth Circle though! That was tragic! I only finished it because I couldn't believe she could write something so awful! But no, there was no saving grace ending! Shiver is great! How did you get your hands on Linger? And do you read any Karin Slaughter? Into crime?[br/]F :)

Hi Ali, I enjoyed your review of Dreamland, and I totally understood your frustration - have felt that myself with many books, the worst one lately was The Tenth Circl by Jodi Picoult's (whose work I usually enjoy), but I really enjoyed Dreamland! Guess I feel that you are a lucky girl if you can't comprehend why someone in an abusive relationship wouldn't attempt to defend themselves. This is not a personal criticism of you AT ALL, please believe that. I just think the way we respond to a book can depend on our own life experiences and those of other people with whom we come into contact. (I relate this to myself, not presuming to know you.) I thought the author was successful in conveying Caitlin's emergence from a destructive relationship stronger and wiser with new more positive interactions with her family. Life lessons learned without being preachy, I guess. But the beauty of books is that we all have a different take on the message within its pages and we all have different tastes. And I'm always up for a discussion/healthy debate, which is why I joined shelfari. Enjoyed your review, by the way, and you have some cool books on your shelf that I haven't seen before.[br/]Happy reading![br/]Fiona
