I am a dedicated bookaholic who will read anything, anytime, anywhere so long as it's well written and not boring. I love it when a story grabs me by the throat and won't let go! I don't really care for legal, medical, or religious fiction, but am up for just about anything else....

  • When She Woke
    • Rated 5 stars

This book was amazing! Kept calling to me until I finally picked it up, and then I couldn't put it down! The story really grabbed me, and I wound up staying up much too late in order to finish it. The whole idea of literally dying people different colors is both unbelievably cruel, yet strangely fascinating.

While I've seen several reviews referencing The Scarlet Letter, this story actually reminded me of The Handmaid's Tale, where women had their rights stripped away and the country was taken over by self-righteous male hypocrites.

Hannah was raised a "good girl" and made to feel as though her natural feelings were somehow wrong. A gifted seamstress, she was reduced to designing and sewing gorgeous outfits in secret in order to feed her artistic side. Repressed in every possible way, she engages in an affair with a married man and chooses to have an abortion rather than risk her lover's career.

Her punishment is severe. Kept in solitary confinement for 30 days after the procedure, with her every move televised to the public, Hannah is then released to survive as best she can. Forbidden to return home by her scandalized mother, Hannah's father finds her a place in a halfway house called The Straight Path Center. Technically a religious organization to help women find their way back to redemption, it's actually worse than prison.

Hannah finds that she's stronger than she ever believed possible, as she takes a stand and refuses to take any more of the abusive treatment and leaves the halfway house. Her journey to freedom is fascinating, and I loved watching Hannah grow and discover that there's a whole other world out there. While there are several strong secondary characters who help her along the way, this is ultimately Hannah's story.

This was a fascinating story, with fully developed characters, an interesting plot, and a totally fascinating premise. Jordan is an amazingly talented writer, and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next! Definitely one for the Keeper Shelf!

  • Love Lies Bleeding
    • Rated 3 stars

This is one of those books that caught my eye because of a promising synopsis, but didn't turn out the way I expected. I didn't really care for Sam, the main character. I was sympathetic towards her at first, but her behavior eventually turned me off. Didn't care for her family or fiance either, but some of the secondary characters were okay. And I really liked Roxy!

Sam has nightmares because of her attack. Horrible nightmares. In pain, she lashes out at her fiance and anyone who tries to get too close. Jackson, her fiance, seems like a nice guy at first. And he only wants whats best for her, right? Or does he? And what about Sam's parents? Did they send her away to recover in the peace and quiet of the country, or because she was no longer their perfect little girl? Honestly, Sam annoyed me so much at this point that I didn't really care.

While I've never been the victim of a violent attack, Sam's reaction felt off to me somehow. I could understand her medication affecting her behavior, but she didn't come across as a very nice person to begin with, so it was hard for me to care about her story. And by the time strange things started happening, it was a little too late for me.

This was an okay story with a strange twist, but my main objection was that I didn't really care for any of the characters. Maybe it's just me, but it's hard for me to enjoy a story when I don't really like the characters. Gave this one a 3/5 as there was nothing wrong with the writing and overall, it was okay.

  • Confessions of a Call Center Gal
    • Rated 4 stars

As a fellow call center gal, I have to confess that I really loved this book! Like Maddy, I've dealt with team leads and AHT, but instead of the Not Ready button we have ACW (after call work). Are call centers dysfunctional? Of course they are! So many rules and regulations and having to deal with angry callers, yet Lisa has managed to put a humorous spin on it while still remaining true to the life.

Maddy is a smart woman who, like many others, cannot find a job in her chosen field. She takes what she hopes is a temporary job in a call center and enters the weird, wild world of customer service. Lisa's characters are fun and interesting and will be familiar to anyone who has worked in this environment. There are the lifers who have been there seemingly forever, as well as the agents just passing through. To her surprise, Maddy not only survives, but is promoted! So is her hunky crush Mika and BFF Kars.

This story is definitely for adults with a sense of humor. Lisa shows that it's a tough life that can reduce agents to tears, so a healthy dose of humor is needed to survive. Some of the scenes that seem too over the top to be true are the ones that had me laughing the hardest and thinking been there, done that! The crazy email addresses. The hard to decipher accents. The strange requests. All of these rang true!

This is a very funny, original book that gives a glimpse into the life of a customer service agent at a call center. It's about time that someone told our story! Whether you've worked in a call center or not, you need to read this book! If you've never been an operator, maybe you'll be a little more sympathetic next time you call with a problem. And if you have been an agent, this is your story! Go! Buy it! And high fives to all the call center gals out there!

  • Aggie's Nine Heroes

    Aggie's Nine Heroes

    by Diana Laurence
    • Rated 4 stars

This was an amazing story! I liked Aggie from the very beginning, but fell in love with her when she discovered Neil Gaiman's Sandman and developed a crush on Morpheus. Who could you not love a girl like that?

Really enjoyed getting to know Aggie, her grandfather Bernie, and watching them change over the years. Bernie sounds like an awesome grandfather, even if he did have the occasional issue. Really got a kick out of his fascination with fads, from the hula hoop to beanie babies. And I loved learning the story behind his collection!

Aggie was a great character, as she never let go of her dreams as she grew up. Most children lose faith in superheroes, but not Aggie! She not only keeps the faith, but makes her dream come true! Thought she was lucky in finding her heroes and a little surprised that there were no missteps, but was pleased with the team she eventually put together.

My only complaint is that there were no mistakes. Granted, Bernie does make an error in judgement with serious ramifications, but the Nine Heroes are pretty awesome right out of the gate. Think there should have been a learning curve of some sort, as I'm sure that even Superman couldn't up, up and away perfectly the first time he tried to fly! To have every plan work perfectly was a little unrealistic, but that might just be because I'm a little on the cynical side. Still a great story with great characters!

Gave this one a 4/5 as it's a great story with interesting characters, a well developed plot, and excellent writing!

Gave this a 4/5 as I enjoyed the stories and would recommend it to anyone looking for new authors or a quick read. Keep in mind that it is an adult romance novel and all of the stories include sex scenes.

  • Happy Birthday to Me (Birthday Trilogy)
    • Rated 4 stars

This book was incredible! It pulled me in and made me cry in places, which hasn't happened in quite awhile. I LOVE it when a book makes me cry! Means the author has done their job and made the characters and story come alive for me!

To be honest, Cameron is a bit of a jerk. Too cute, a sports star, dating the popular gorgeous girl...you remember the BMOC at school, right? Yep, that's Cameron. Everything in Cam's life is perfect, until one day, it's not. He doesn't even notice that he's aging at first, and is more excited than worried when he finally grows a beard. Sure it grows in freakishly fast, but he's so happy to finally have facial hair that he doesn't worry. But then he wakes up one morning and his six-pack is gone. What the heck? One emergency liposuction session later, and Cameron is ready to go! Hello? If I woke up one morning with an extra 50 pounds, I wouldn't be worried about lipo, but would be heading to the Mayo Clinic ASAP! :o

Cameron's body keeps changing at an alarming pace. After extensive testing, Cameron and his parents receive the shocking news that he seems to be aging one year every day. His mother does not take this news well, and even reminds the doctor that they're not in an episode of the Twilight Zone. This line made me laugh, as I think I would react the same way if someone told me my child was aging an entire year every night.

Rather than seek further medical attention, Cam decides he just wants to finish his senior year of high school and try his best to do normal things until his time runs out. An odd choice, as I doubt I would want to finish school in his shoes, but it's his life and his decision.

Really enjoyed this story, as Cameron learned what was really important in life as he came face to face with his own mortality. It's true that some people don't really learn what's important until faced with life-changing situations. Is Cameron perfect? No. That's part of what made the story so compelling. Same with his parents, who have to face the fact that their child will in all likelihood die of old age right before their eyes.

Had a little problem with the ending of the book and the explanation about Cameron's condition as it just didn't ring true for me, but enjoyed the book otherwise. Didn't really like the school librarian as she seemed a little like a caricature, but the rest of the cast were good. Especially Cam's father, who used to focus too much on what people looked like instead of what was inside, but that was understandable since he was a plastic surgeon!

All in all, thought this was a good read. The author drew me in and made me believe that someone could age an entire year overnight, every night, and would die of old age before his 18th birthday! I grew to care about about Cameron and believed his story to the point where it brought tears to my eyes. Now that's a good story! :)

  • The Leftovers
    • Rated 5 stars

Initially attracted to this book because of the timeliness of the subject (the Rapture), the story soon sucked me in and wouldn't let go! I got involved with Kevin and Nora and Tom and the rest of the "leftovers", trying to survive after the Sudden Departure that may or may not have been the biblical Rapture. No matter what happens, life goes on. That's the beauty of the human race...we survive. Some better than others, and their somewhat bumpy journey is what makes this book so enthralling.

The story is told by several different characters, but it never got confusing or unwieldy. The narrators were Kevin, his wife Laurie, son Tom, daughter Jill, and Nora, a woman who lost her entire family. The chapters alternated between these people, and we slowly get to know them and their pain. It was fascinating watching how different personalities reacted to the Departure, and the coping mechanisms they came up with: from the Guilty Remnants to Holy Wayne to the Barefoot People. Fascinating!

I liked that the story didn't really pick up until a few years after the Departure, as it would have been an entirely different story right afterwards. This way, things had a chance to settle down and people learn how to cope. Or not cope, whatever the case may be.

Gave this a 5/5 rating as I couldn't put it down and finished it in a single day! It was an exhausting read, but well worth it! I really liked that we don't know if this was really the Rapture, because the characters don't know. Perrotta is a gifted writer who really made me care about these people, and left me wondering how I would have reacted in the same situation. The story works on different levels, and I'm still digesting it. And BTW, I absolutely love the cover! Very eye-catching!

  • Graveminder
    • Rated 4 stars

Rebekkah has itchy feet and can't seem to settle down anywhere. She moves from place to place, as she never quite feels at home in any one location. The only home she really has is with her grandmother, who she visits periodically. Unbeknownst to Rebekkah, her grandmother is a Graveminder, tasked with keeping the dead at rest and their town safe. Rebekkah is her heir, but her grandmother wanted her to have a taste of freedom and kept postponing telling Rebekkah of her destiny. Suddenly, her grandmother is gone and Rebekkah faces the strangest on-the-job training anyone has ever known!

Helping the Graveminder with their duties is the Undertaker. Like Rebekkah, Byron wasn't told of his destiny until it was almost too late. They learn that the Graveminder and Undertaker are tied together, which may explain their lifelong attraction to each other. With no time to figure out their feelings for each other, Rebekkah and Byron must work together to deal with the threat to their town and figure out why the dead are suddenly so restless.

There are actually two mysteries in this book: why are the dead suddenly so restless, and what exactly are Rebekkah and Byron supposed to do to help? Unfortunately, the Graveminder's journals that her grandmother promised would answer Rebekkah's questions are missing, but at least they have the Undertaker's books. They are running out of time, as more and more residents are being attacked. I loved that I got so caught up in the story that I worried about what would happen next!

This was a great read! Haven't read anything similar to the graveminder/undertaker premise, and I really liked how Melissa kept us guessing. I enjoyed the relationship between Rebekkah and Byron, and understood her confusion even though I didn't agree with her hesitation (who wouldn't want a guy like Byron!?). Gave this a 4/5 as it was a great read, kept me guessing, and introduced me to something original, which I love! Melissa is a very talented author, and now I want to read more of her books!

  • Cloaked
    • Rated 3 stars

This was an enjoyable read! An amusing twist on the classic tale of a poor boy going on a quest to win the hand of the beautiful princess, with references to a few other fairy tales thrown in along the way.

Johnny is a hard worker, who is doing his best to help his mother run their shoe repair shop in a swanky hotel. He secretly dreams of designing shoes, but doesn't really have the time or means to make that dream come true. Despite their hard work, Johnny and his mother can barely make ends meet. All that changes when a beautiful princess stops by his store to request his help in finding her brother. Who has been turned into a frog. By a witch. Uh-huh.

And so begins Johnny's quest to track down the missing Prince. There are talking animals, a magic cloak, elves, and multiple obstacles to overcome on his journey. Johnny seems to handle his abrupt introduction to this magical reality rather well, and does so with a sense of humor. Does he learn important life lessons along the way? Of course he does!

This was a fast, fun read, but think it may be aimed at a slightly younger crowd than the usual young adult book. It was amusing, and an easy read. Didn't love it, but I enjoyed it all the same and think it would be perfect for my young niece. Gave it a 3/5 as I liked it, but didn't love it. Flinn is a talented writer, and I'm looking forward to seeing what she comes up with next!

  • Clarity
    • Rated 4 stars

Really enjoyed this one, as Clare is very likable! She grew up "different" in a small town, which is never easy. Her entire family is psychic, and her mother has found a way to use their talent to make a living. Unfortunately, this just makes Clare feel like an even bigger freak.

When there's a murder in town, Clare's ex-boyfriend convinces her to use her gift to try and help solve the crime. Murder is bad for tourism, and the ex's father is mayor. Factor in the little tidbit the the new detective has a hot son, and Clare is on the case! Clare discovers even more incentive to help when her brother turns out to be the last known person to see the murdered girl alive, so she needs to prove his innocence!

This was a fast, interesting read that left me wanting to learn more about Clare. For someone who has always felt like a freak, she seemed remarkably well-adjusted. Sure, she had no girlfriends, but she certainly isn't the only teenager like that. She has her brother and his best friend, so it's not like she's entirely friendless. And her gift has to be hard to live with, as that's how her boyfriend became her ex-boyfriend.

Gave this one a 4/5 as I enjoyed the story and it left me wanting more! Harrington is a good writer, and kept things interesting. She made life in a tourist town sound real, and I liked that Clare wasn't perfect. Looking forward to the sequel, which is due out next year!
