If I just stopped and read everything I want to read, I'd read myself into the afterlife. Books have been reliable friends, and a good way to remember certain times of my life. The biggest irony in my life as an English teacher is how little time I have to read during the school year. I am going to read myself silly this summer. I cannot WAIT.

    Hi again Alex,
Many of the high school readers I spoke to at Daytona this year shared my distinct impression that the push is on to have more college readers and fewer high school readers. They seem to be trying to accomplish this by rotating high school readers out and bringing in grad students still very wet behind the ears. Many of us also seemed to perceive a palpable bias towards men, especially young'uns and ethnic fellows . . .. Some things never change, huh????

    Hi Alex!
It's Daytona Colleen. How was the Elizabeth George Write Away? Someone at the reading this June gave me her last one in her detective series. Have you read that one? OMG!
    Hope all is well.

I got Donna's note that you tried to join the AP group but got not response. I didn't get any requests, but I've been having problems with the Shelfari server, so please try again.

You are right. I was talking about this with my husband and he said, no I had it wrong it starts out at the fountain and the sex scence is in the library. So once again I had to go back to the drawing board. He seems to remember books, i have to hear a couple of things about it and then I go oh yeah!

In atonnment didn't the sister walk in the bedroom and he was kissing her? That set off a full book of mishaps, misunderstanding, etc. Good book I thought. I hope it was okay to leave you a note. I was reading your note and remembering what you read came up. This cracked me up because I always turn to my husband, because he usually reads the book after me and say " what was that about" and then I remember.

I did see the interview and it was very shallow. He said almost nothing and she didn't have very good questions to ask. His bio tells much more as does the contrast between this book and the earlier ones. As I am nearing 70 myself, I recognize the emotions. Another interesting diversion is comparing the final paragraph of THE ROAD with the ending of GATSBY. There are some interesting parallels.

WOuld you believe that my teenage grandchildren find McCafferty boring...and they love fantasy.
I would like to discuss THE ROAD with you. All through it, I dreaded the ending, knowing that CM does not contrive endings and it would not be nice. But the conclusion is truly uplifiting. The last two pargraphs comprise the climax of the novel. Although CM does not talk about this himself, the novel is clearly a Christ allegory. The boy HAS THE BREATH OF GOD, is ANOINTED, loves all people, etcetc..and comes out ON THE THIRD DAY. An old English prof like CM does not play around with images this extensively. The detail that makes it distinctiy CM is that he is not talking about a sacrificed Christ or atonement. He is talking about Christ the leader, the teacher, the symbol of love and goodness. CM is now in his 70's with a 7 year old son. This is his hopeful book, his seeking for goodness in the future. ...just some things for you to think about.
