Sorry, but I'm gonna have to chalk up most positive reviews of this book to weeaboo culture. It was pretty bad. Not creepy or thought-provoking at all, and the translation was pretty damn clunky. At several points throughout the book I wanted to highlight or copy down certain sentences and phrases as examples, but was too lazy, so you'll have to find them yourself. They weren't awful, they just sounded so clumsy and trite that it took me right out of the story. TWO THUMBS DOWN. Way down.

Disappointing. I could barely follow some of the plot, particularly the war & bombing scenes. An overload of characters I didn't care about. I was frustrated by the ending. The last chapter or so felt hurried and rang false.

I really disliked this book. The wordplay could be pretty, at times even beautiful, and was very poetic; but the pages were jam-packed with incredibly flowery language that grated on my nerves. The repetition, the Random Capitalization, the overwrought descriptions and heavy-handed symbolism had me rolling my eyes. By the time I found out what happened to the characters (which she'd been alluding to every other page for the entire first half of the novel) I didn't really give a shit anymore.

i really disliked sedaris on first read - i felt he worded things too carefully and tried too hard for a joke. it was awkward for me. on second reading, years later, i found much of this book laugh-out-loud funny, some of it bittersweet and all of it engaging. i'm not sure what changed but i'm looking forward to reading more.

Barth obviously has a lot of fun when he writes; his enthusiasm shows. Bitter and very funny. I'm looking forward to reading his later books.

A fast read, and it kept my attention for the most part, but was alarmingly tame and bland for a book about an ex-porn-star burn-victim junkie with a schizo centuries-old girlfriend. Read kind of like a tired Chuck Palahniuk channeling crap historical romance.
