I'm an avid reader who works as a corporate trainer in the health care industry. While most people have a novel inside them, I have several, and am getting them published as I go.

  • Blake's 7: Their First Adventure
    • Rated 3 stars

This is actually a pretty good novelization of the first four Blake's 7 episodes, adding in a little more detail than the show itself, which suddenly made a few things make a lot more sense than they did when I watched the episode... even after the umpteenth time. However, it's bizarre that the author of a book that came out 10 years AFTER the show would feel the need to mess around with a few key (but unimportant) details (such as Jenna being a brunette instead of a blonde). Still... good for a pulp book.

Everyone should read this book - this really opened my eyes to what it means to be an American Muslim, and how many misconceptions I possessed. Not only are a lot of the mainstream views of Islam more about other cultures where its practiced, rather than the religion itself. In the end, our primary view is skewed by a few extreme examples. An amazing insight into a fascinating belief.

I liked the light-hearted spy mission gone wrong aspect of this book, I was really enjoying it, and... then there was a long contemplative, universe-reveal section, since this was the third book in the series. Well... I never read the other two, so that's where this book lost me. I might have given this a 4 or 5 if I read the earlier books, but the last 100 pages were difficult because I didn't.

Finally managed to get this book done! A light-hearted romp through space with a secret agent, a runaway groom, and several other characters who decided to follow along as they save the galaxy.

I think Ms. Harris creates a wonderful world, love the characters in Bon Temps, Louisiana, the vampires and associated strangeness are fantastic, but... the main character and love interest fall flat. The telepath as detective is a great twist, but doesn't make her that intriguing a character.

I'll admit, I have difficulty with Victorian literature... the story starts off confusing me by starting on a boat off of England, but then rarely referencing the fact that he's telling this story. So when the narrator jumps back to the present, it's disorienting. (spoiler warning) Then there's this great build up to Mr. Kurtz, oh the terrible Mr. Kurtz, Oh the Great Mr. Kurtz.... and then you meet him and he's dead. If anything, I thought The narrator Was sympathetic to Mr. Kurtz, rather than having him be the great villain I've heard of. All in all, it might be a great novella, but I think I read this about fifty years too late, because it fails to grip me.

A wonderful romp through Toxic Boston with an eco-activist. I was thrown off by the introduction, since the author's first reader hated the main character. I saw her point... but really the book is mostly male fantasy. Fighting the man, banging hot chicks, getting chased by evil corporate goons... what's not to love?

All the things you wanted to say in an article you wrote... but never did, are in this book. A hilarious view of style books and the ridiculousness of modern media.

Kay never fails to amaze me - his wonderful historical fantasy worlds are filled with wonderful characters. There were wonderful setups, reveals, and details about this fictional southern France. A worthwhile read!

  • Lies My Teacher Told Me
    • Rated 5 stars

Rarely does a book challenge me, inspire me, and really anger me all within the same cover. This is that book - a really harsh critical look at how textbooks (and we as history teachers) really teach American History and why we turn off students to a subject we hold dear. Amazing! I learned things I never imagined, and although at times he feels liberally biased, he's actually quite even handed, challenging up and down the spectrum. A worthwhile read!
