My candle burns at both ends,
it will not last the night;
but, ah, my foes, and oh, my friends--
It gives a lovely light! (e stV m)

    Too much Newt Gingrich praise...because he was interviewed by the author. He was his usual hypocritical, self-righteous, self-praising self...which made it a less-than-wonderful read...

    I really enjoy reading Ian McEwan, but, even though Saturday was a good, fast read, it was a little on the predictable side. Other than that issue with the plot, though, it was a nice examination of a mind working over time. I'm doubting that that was the intention, but the meandering time line & subject matter (telling you about the whole of the main character's life while the action was only taking place over a 24-hour period) had the effect of witnessing a brain that can never stop. A brain that's thinking about something all the time. . .since that's pretty much how mine runs it was nice to focus mine entirely on the same action of someone else's thoughts! Less exhausting to witness than to experience! I have to say, though, it was very romantic & charming to have a sequence where a killer was disarmed by a poem! (=

    I must have read this 100 times after I first read it. I haven't put many of my childhood books up on my shelf, but some of them, like Charlotte's Web, definitely deserve to be included...

    I read this book super duper quickly cos it was just that much of a "page-turner", I guess. . .for lack of a better phrase. It's the first book of Robert Harris's that I've read, but it definitely has made me curious to check out some of his others. . .especially the Roman trilogy. The best part of The Ghost? That it didn't have a happy ending. . .

    The good news: This book was written by an "insider". . .a guy who had personal relationships with most of the principal players in the story. . .not only that, he was also one of the first people on the scene the morning that bern was found dead. In other words, we get just about as close as one could get to the action. The bad news: Marx doesn't always, um, stay on topic. All of that proximity becomes irrelevant if he constantly digresses back to his own childhood & marriage. All in all it's a pretty good read for a guilty pleasure or a rainy day, but, only a few months after reading, I'm having trouble even remembering who the bad guy is!

    I pretty much love everything ever done by Charles Baudelaire, and this is no exception. . .if you don't know him go pick up Flowers of Evil immediately!!! He's a genius in French or English. . .

    My review is no reflection on the book. . .it's well-written & a really interesting story. The only thing is that I'm just really not a fan of the whole "outdoor adventure" thing. . .taking them OR reading them. A lame review, I know, but, what can I say, I'd rather be reading about Mary, Queen of Scots. . . (=

    I'm all for guilty pleasure reads & rock and roll dish. . .& victor bockris has actually written some pretty cool books. But, bebe buell is just really annoying with the tired old "we weren't groupies, we were muses" thing. She comes off as a hanger-on who just so happened to hang on to all the right pairs of bell bottoms. If it weren't for her exes' and her daughter's successes I doubt this would've even been published. I mean, do YOU know anybody who's spending hours in line for tix to her and her "punk" band's shows? Read Pamela Des Barres instead.

    The good thing is that Mr. Kanin lived & worked in Hollywood, so he has pretty good stories. The bad thing is that Mr. Kanin thinks he has GREAT stories. If you're looking for old-school Hollywood dish, read Hollywood Babylon by Kenneth Anger. . .
