It's not grim here, but we are certainly cranking up on the humidity and heat factors here in WNY State. It seems to rain--heavily--every 3 days. My beans in raised beds are thrilled; my squash in the pasture's clay soil are drowning. Next year it will be raised beds for all veggie endeavors.

My next title is The Zookeeper's Wife. Any thoughts on that one?

Just got my hands on "Atonement", thanks to another Shelfari friend, and am still pondering that ending. What a plot! Have you read much by McEwan? I found "On Chesil Beach" disappointing.

Good to hear. The subject seems really juicy and different, but it looks like an investment in time, so I'd been on the fence about starting it. (That's how books don't get read.....)

Just read an awesome first novel by an author from your side of the pond--The Raw Shark Texts, by Steven Hall. Find review on my shelf.
Would you clarify the equivalent in Am. English for "a jumper"? "Trainers" are tennis shoes, right? "Biscuits" would be cookies over here. What about "chocolate digestives"?
Thanks. I can guess from context, but would be glad for translations by a native speaker.

Glad you found your way to The Book Thief. If you liked the combination of text and graphics, check out The City of Dreaming Books. It has less historical references, but is wonderful fantasy/satire.

I have yet to begin 'The Historian', tho it has long been on my list and I know I will enjoy. 'Assigned' reading for bookclubs keeps getting in the way of taking on a long, non-club book. Glad you're liking-- perhaps it'll be an addition to my annual lengthy but manageable New Year's resolutions...

Yes, I tried to temper my comments on the book, since I did feel it was a lot of work to read, for an arguably disappointing ending.

Didn't see them on your list (at a quick glance), but my three fave reads of recent times are: 'The Book Thief' (out in paperback next week), 'History of Love', and 'Middlesex' (I know it's an 'Oprah' book these days, but it won the Pulitzer before she discovered it...

Anyway, you may have read any or all.

Hey- I like your book list. This is Shannon's neighbor Katie. Always wondered about 'Longitude'.
