“I had never heard of this book when my photography teacher lent it to me. I had asked him to bring me a few books he recommended after telling him what a bookworm I am, and he brought a small pile. One book I'd read before but decided to reread and the rest were new to me.
I had, of course, heard of the internment of Japanese-Americans during the second World War but I had not read any personal stories about that experience.
My teacher mentioned that his father had some personal experience of it and it seemed a reminder of how closely we still tread to what some would have us believe is ancient history.”
