I am currently a Librarian Assistant II at the University of Memphis Library. I am also a Grad student in the Information Science program at UTK. That means I have almost zero spare time for reading what I want to read--maybe I can squeeze some in over the breaks. I also watch waaaaaay too much tv. I've begun on a project that may take too long... more »

I think this book is awesome. As far as my high-school Spanish can suggest, the book is truly bilingual, not a book written in one language and translated into the other. I didn't know much about the border between Mexico and the United States, or its history, but I do now. I think the artwork is incredible, and the superhero story is unique.

  • Not So Fast, Songololo

Niki Daly is swiftly becoming one of my favorite children's author/illustrator. Little Malusi likes to do things slowly. When his Gogo (Grandmother) needs someone to go with her to town, Malusi is picked to go. He helps her with the crosswalks, and carries her shopping. Along the way Malusi sees an awesome pair of Takies (tennis shoes), and Gogo decides to get them for him. Suddenly this boy who likes to go slow, is moving too fast for is Gogo!

  • Aunt Flossie's Hats (And Crab Cakes Later)
    • Rated 4 stars

It is a cute story about the bond between two little girls and their great aunt. The hats each represent a story, and the Susan and Sarah love trying them on and listening to the important story represented by each hat. The illustrations bothered me a little bit because they seemed too static, and didn't really capture the joy the sisters had in playing dress-up. They are right, though, that crab cakes are the best!

great story about the beginnings of the bear dance used by the Ute to celebrate the coming of spring. The oil on canvas illustrations give a softness that help set the dreamy mood.

  • The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses
    • Rated 3 stars

The unnamed girl of this story hauls off to live with the wild horses. She is brought back a year later and is happy to see her parents, but misses her horse people. So, she goes back to live with them, visiting her parents every year. Finally one year she does not visit (but there is now a new mare among the horses) meaning that the horse people and Navaho and Sioux are kin to the horses. I loved the story, and the pen and ink and watercolor drawings are some of the best I've seen. The patterns and detail on the tipis and blankets really came alive for me.

  • Sam (Paperstar)

Beautiful detailed charcoal drawings. Poor Sam is just looking for something to do, and everyone else in the house thinks he is in the way, or going to break somthing. Thankfully, his mom rescues him from his tears by asking him to help her bake.

Wonderful story about a little boy with a lot of determination, and huge imagination. Kondi gets his wires and trades his knife to get more so he can make a galimoto (a type of toy car) He spends all day working on it, and by nightfall he is finished. It is a fine galimoto!
