I started reading when I was four years old, and I pretty much haven't stopped since. As my mother has remarked, if there's nothing else available, I will read the toothpaste tube. I read everything except romance novels, and as long as the book is well written, I'll finish it even if I'm not thrilled by the story. I guess I'm always... more »

No. Just no. Put this book down and run away. Unbelievably stilted and awkward. Blending Dicken's phrases with modern slang does not work. At all. Painful to read. But the illustrations by Brian Selznik are great, which is why I initially picked it up.

Good story, but ironically, the writing itself betrays a latent racism, even while the author purports to be railing against it. Every black character speaks in a corn pone Southern dialect, while the white characters drop nary a "g" or a "bless her heart!" we'll, there might be a colorful metaphor thrown in here and there for the country club set, but that's as far as it goes. Makes you wonder.
The other big problem is that Stockett either lacks confidence in her own writing or she doesn't trust the reader to understand what she's trying to get across. This leads to stock characters who are veritable charicatures who all fail or succeed exactly as you'd expect them to. The outer beauty/ inner goodness :: ugliness/ evilness this is way overdone as well. Promising book, but ultimately disappointing.

Truly delicious stuff in here, not just the ice creams, but also the recipes for toppings (praline sauce, caramelized white chocolate bombe shell, honey butterscotch sauce, fruit sauces, and more) and ice cream add- ins (honey nut pralines, sugar plumped fruits, honeycomb candy) and things to go with (vanilla bean marshmallows, ice cream cones, and a fantastic French macaroon recipe, for making ice cream sandwiches). Lots of unusual flavors, and a wealth of information (and science!) about how to get the best ice cream out of your machine. Delicious stuff. Probably not for dieters. :)

Gerald and Piggy break the Fourth Wall - I've not had so much fun since Grover and The Monster At The End of This Book!

    Easy Gluten-Free Baking

Elizabeth Barbone is not a celiac sufferer, so she tests her GF recipes by comparing them to their wheatified counterparts. They measure up very well - the hamburger buns in particular - fast (for a bread product), easy, and they stand up to a juicy burger quite well.

Well written, especially the descriptions of cheese! - but the plot was not quite tight enough for me. Milton's a fine writer, though.

Fun and full of moral philosophy! The mystery isn't much like a traditional mystery - though McCall's generally aren't, anyway - but Isobel's amateur investigations and her musings on morals are delightful, if you like that sort of thing, which I do. Julian Baggini, (actual) cofounding editor of The Philosopher's Magazine and author of The Pig That Wants to be Eaten makes a guest appearance. Kind of. tres amusant!

  • Shadows on the Grass

A follow up to Out of Africa, Shadows on the Grass comes nowhere near the brilliance of its predecessor in terms of grace of language, literary themes, or depictions of the beauty of the land itself. However, Shadows on the Grass isn't really about those things at all; it's more a catch-up of sorts, as Dinesen relates what happens to "her" people, at least as many of them as she can track down. It's a nice short read for those who like to know "Whatever Happened To . . .", but everyone else can skip it.

    A fun, lightweight Britty mystery.
