I started reading when I was four years old, and I pretty much haven't stopped since. As my mother has remarked, if there's nothing else available, I will read the toothpaste tube. I read everything except romance novels, and as long as the book is well written, I'll finish it even if I'm not thrilled by the story. I guess I'm always... more »

Robert is a much more parroty sound than Polly-it makes much more sense to call one that. If I ever have one, it's definitely going to be called Robert !

Poor Polly-inpollerated in a cage :D No wonder some become cross and inpollerant (sprays tea on keyboard at own wit)

(eavesreading) I was charmed to read in a Durrell that the generic name for parrots in Guyana is Robert in the same way that Polly is in England (and America ?) Imagine a Guyanan writing home to say how funny it seems that parrots in England are called Polly and saying that THEIR next parrot will be called that. I love the idea of calling parrots Robert.

We had some giant birds called Moas-and I met a cockatoo called Lorne Moa :D :D :D

I haven't gone mad, this was suggested by the Bob ref. Well, on second thoughts...

One would think it would make you a Major Dame, but somehow I don't think it works that way.

Oh, how nice about the discush. Good. Thank you!

Well, yes, you know, I do think it would be nice if you lead the Lodge discush. You've such a connexion with the Living? Game?

Oh, aren't you going to call yourself Dame Daisy Barksby-Price? You've earned it.

Oh! Well, never mind then. I wanted to find someone who knows his work and loves him to lead it if I can-- always a help with a new author (one I don't know). Perhaps it was Chloe.

Daisy, I know you have an abiding affection for David Lodge's work. Would you care to lead the discussion of "The British Museum is Falling Down" in April?

Ha ! we could start a vineyard with the number we have.

I imagine it tasting like bottled sunshine.

The little ones on the lawn are sweet-so pretty-but the tall straggly ones are a word that Shelf may not let me use.

    :D

As James was worryingly ill, I didn't have too bad a conscience about abandoning the unlucky pair left behind (he suddenly recovered, like a speeded up film) but I wouldn't have anyway, I fear.

Although I KNOW that, in the highly unlikely event of my having to run from someone who's shooting at me, I should zigzag, I doubt if I'd have the presence of mind to DO it, just as every year people drown because they fight rips that carry them out to sea instead of relaxing and letting themselves go until the rip fizzes out. But while they must have known & I have known from when I was tiny not to try to swim out, of it it would all but impossible to let yourself drift with a rip and not struggle.

Lord, it's hot today. I have just mowed the lawn which was approaching the stage where it resembled an African jungle. So did/does everyone else's, as we have had so much unseasonal rain. I kept expecting to meet a lion coming towards me. (Actually, it was more of a dandelion farm)

Thank you. Who knows what's going on in her head ? I can only be a friend to the poor sucker who married her and commiserate with his poor daughters who have this person as a stepmother (goes cold at mere thought)

I only hope that he didn't see another friend and me acting like prison escapers on Christmas day, leaving as soon as soon as we were decently able to-for some reason the friend at whose house we were having lunch invited them too. K & I ran to the car & took off like stuntmen in a film, skrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!!! Well, just about.

We had pumpkin tonight too; a rather odd-looking wild one, but it tasted all right. I did it with lentils and Indian tomatoes and had it on rice. Nice.

If you knew someone whose mother died in the 80s-decade & age-and who had to be certified then and is still so obsessed with this that she has taken the mother's name as her 2nd name & pretends that she has always had it and has bought a grave plot and put a headstone on it 'so that she has somewhere to mourn'...would you be wondering just what is going on in this person's head ?

I still miss my mother terribly & have those 'I want my mother !!!' moments, but this !!! I'd value your opinion !

Aren't we lucky on AA that we have such a pool of knowledge on so many things between us ?

Thank you, darling. I'm afraid there's only one possible outcome. It's just a matter of time. Hubby is flying to see him a little later this month. Thank goodness we just had a lovely family vacation together with all of Hubby's family present.

Falling to bits all round me while I've thrown myself anew into some further education. Blood-Red Dahlia thinks this decay is heaven, of course, and has set her very own strain of climbing rose -- no flowers, bigger thorns -- clambering over the loose bricks of the west wing to hasten their collapse. Soon I'll be living in a forest, still scribbling notes in the margins of Tom Jones.
