I'm eclectic with everything, and I have over 900 books at home with the library only a half-block away. I do other things besides reading though. Like buying books... I've read 235 books since September 12th, 2005.

I don't use one source to figure out what to read. The 1001 list is only one. There are a genre's I try NOT to read, like horror, and certain authors I don't read. Like I mentioned in my last note, I didn't like The Tenant in Wildfell Hall, and there are a number of other books on the list that I don't think belong there. I wonder how much is the publishing houses controlling it or is it popular sentiment.

Popularity of books doesn't work for me. I tried reading the first Harry potter book and found the writing and story very boring. The Da Vinci code lacks characters. I prefer a good flawed character at the center of a story. You read a lot more non-fiction than me. If I read it, I'm interested in a particular person or topic. Maybe if I could read as quickly as you I could read everything, but I'm stuck focusing on just a few things.

Besides other sources and people to find books, I found this site. I peek into groups and shelves looking for interesting things to read...including yours ;D

" someone ripped out pages out of the book. ARGH!"

    Beasts !!!

I just looked up and saw the title "I'm perfect, you're doomed" LOL

I noticed Asimov on your shelf. Have you ever read The Illustrated Man by Ray Bradbury?
Very good sci-fi short stories...some of them classics.

I gave up on The Tenant of Wildfell Hall...too boring...even of its on the 1001 list.
At the moment, I'm reading Empress Orchid, a fictionalized account of a Chinese
    Empress from mid 1800s.

Hope the rest of your books are all in order !

lol...that happens to me if I don't like the book or its tough reading.
When I started Ivanhoe, I thought it would be an easier go, but
I swerved off the road and read a whole book in the meantime.

Reading Too many books? How is that possible?

I'm a slow reader, so I don't have your problem.
Of course thats not totally true. I have started Bleak House, Ivanhoe, and Here be Dragons
while I still have 50 pages of Outlander to go, a few chapters of Wildfell Hall too.
I seem to lose interest at the end anymore, just like movies. The beginnings are like the spring,
with voluminous growth, while the end usually just takes a wrong turn and crashes.

It really has to do with my mood. I read based on how I feel, which can change hourly.

How did you like the first few Dune books?
I see you have two others that look interesting...History of science and the What my teacher got wrong
It reminds me. Someone mentioned an interesting title in one of my groups about general science for
the layman...my pc was down and I never got it in my list. I guess I'll say goodbye and see if I can find it.

Keep reading, and let me know if you find something really good.

I see you're reading Dune. I read the first three, all there was at the time, a long time ago. Pretty good.
Supposedly water was a metaphor for oil.

You might like Stranger in a Strange Land. To me its more philosophy than Sci-fi. Its one of the best books I've read.
A good combination of action, ideas, and humor. Only one caveat: there are a few sexist remarks that bother me.

I think you would do great as a pharmacologist. I thought of doing that myself years ago, but I have a real problem
with names...of anything: books, authors, friends, family ;D Fortunately I just say...'hey you'. For pills, there is the white or the red.

Hopefully you won't ever have to throw any of those books out. Its hard as hell. Last year I was forced to. Had to whittle down to the ones I reread.

Good luck on both your ambitions!

Oh, I watch TV. I love the discovery channel, etc.

The other night, it must have been 2am, I'm watching PBS...Absolute Zero. A program on cold
and how scientists over the centuries worked to harness and manipulate the cold. Like refrigeration,
but also in higher tech industries.

TV provides some fodder for my google searches. Sometimes I don't know where I'll end up.

If you want a real good story read
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosalind_Franklin

I saw a program about her. The two guys who took credit for the discovery of DNA, did it based on
her work. They sat in on her seminars and used her data. Once they even asked her to look at their model
and she shot it down. When they created the double-helix model, based on her data, she then said that
model jived. The only reason she never got a nobel prize was because she was dead (nobels only to the living)
She died from all the x-rays she did while working, before they knew x-rays were deadly.

    A very interesting woman.
See TV can be good ;D and led to further reading.

Take care...by the way...you have another great pic! Your pics always make me smile

Coming from "an uninteresting individual," I don't know if that is a compliment or an insult.

I know on Shelfari many of us broadcast our bookshelves like emblazoned chevrons of culture. For me though the books are neither here nor there. It is more important what I do with--what I think about--the books after I have read them that really matters.

    Reading makes me ready.

No, I am not connected with MSN or AIM. The only things I am connected with on line is Shelfari and myspace. And truly that is enugh for me. Too much internet is too much for the brain. Have a good evening!

if your an uninteresting individual , then you sure do have an interesting bookshelf.

Why are you reading about Foam?

Many people comment on my books on philosophy, biographies, etc, but you put me to shame.
Right now I am trying to understand SOUND. I never studied music, which might have helped.
My most recent query to people was about harmonics. Just getting the terminology down is tough.
What I'm attempting to do is learn what makes up the human voice. Why some voices are more
pleasant than others. But something really neat happened the other day. On one of those CSI shows
they described something IBM is working on in regards to voice, and its the same thing I concluded
a few weeks ago...so I must be on the right track ;D

Sorry to bore you...but who else can I talk to about such obscure topics...except my Friend on Selfari
who is reading about FOAM...I really am curious ;D
