Oh, where to start?

I'm an avid reader with lots of other interests that both drive my interest in and are driven by books. My biggest passion (right now and aside from my family) is triathlon. I started participating in them three years ago, and this year I just finished my first half Ironman (70.3 miles of... more »

I have a tender place in my heart for Earth Abides although it may be dated now. It may have been my introduction to the post apocalyptic genre. I don't know if it still holds up. In The Road did you anticipate the father would not make it.

I saw where you read and liked The Road. I was wondering if you thought the author was familiar with prior post-apocalyptic literature such as Alas Babylon, Earth Abides, On the Beach, A Canticle for Liebowitz, the Last Ship, I am Legend, etc. The idea that many will resort to savagery is not new. I think this author's stark treatment of the subject is well-written but none of the ideas are original.

Thanks for that review! I feel like I most definitely will have to read it now. If my TBR stack wasn't so huge right now, I'd start right away. I will let you know when I read it. Hopefully it will be soon.

I'm curious about The Road, Anita. A friend said it was good but I glimpsed a copy of it and see that it's written in stream of consciousness without proper punctuation (ie. no quotation marks when someone is talking). I'm not sure I like that type of writing but I am still intrigued especially now that I see you enjoyed it. I also see there's a movie coming out and I think I'd prefer to read the book first. Your thoughts?

Hi, Anita. I just saw your note on rowanthea's page. I'm back, so don't worry about me. As you can see, I didn't give her many options. I really didn't think anyone was going to steal that book from me (and I really want it!). I was having trouble deciding between a few, actually, so we'll see what I decide if my current book is stolen... ;-)

If a book is tagged as contemporary does that qualify for this months tag or does it have to be tagged as contemporary fiction? I have a contemporary fiction I'm about to start reading, but since I just finished one tagged contemporary I figured I'd ask.

hahaha! It would, wouldn't it!? No, don't worry about Author Author, but thanks for offering. The timing of the trip just means that the only thing that needs to be done while we are away is to post the thread to sign up to choose November's author. Tenia has said she'll take care of that. I am back on the 20th, so I can pick up the rest from there. (And, considering I'm not planning to look at a computer while I'm away, I'm going to have TONS to catch up on, between facebook and shelfari...!)

Hi! I think I'll pass the info on to rowanthea. She offered and you appear to be keeping track for plenty of other people. Thanks so much! I doubt my book will be stolen anyway, but I will prepare rowanthea, just in case. Thanks! :-)

Hi, Anita. I'm a little concerned that the book swap may not be over by the time I leave for my trip (Friday... the last time I'll be looking at my computer will be Thursday evening). Luckily, I already have a book, but just in case it gets stolen... I'll probably just open a new book. Can I just choose #1 now, or should I have someone else choose a random number for me (in case #1 isn't available at the time)? Thanks!
