Oh, where to start?

I'm an avid reader with lots of other interests that both drive my interest in and are driven by books. When I started here, around five years ago, I began a group called Play Book Tag. Amazingly now, it is my most passionate hobby.

I love literary fiction and memoirs. Each year I try to read 50 books,... more »

Hi, you might want to edit your announcement post for British Literature. It says this:
..."please choose ONE book to recommend that you absolutely feel is a "can't miss" for the tag of Family relationships."...

    Hi Anita,
Thanks! The shipping is usually much more expensive, so I was thinking of looking for an ebook, or the gift certificate would work too..

Thank you for the groups undertaking of last years Pulitzer reads. I just read this groups discussion on all three books. Well done. Denis Johnsons writing is beautiful, IMHO. TRAIN DREAMS was 5*. It is so interesting what moves or does not move individuals when they read. Again, stellar thread.

I'm just finishing The Eyre Affair for a 2nd time. I'm thinking it's not your thing. I know how precious your reading time is, I'd hate for you to waste it. It's good and clever, but it seems magical realismish to me. How do you feel about a character being able to travel into a book and change the outcome?

Hurstwood's bit was actually my favorite. On one level, I sympathized with him. I've been unemployed and it does get harder and harder to get out of bed and take care of yourself much less try. Still, I absolutely sympathized with Carrie and wanted to kick him for being so ridiculous. Some of his weird quirks I thought were almost stolen from someone I know. Wearing only old gross clothes, hiding from reality in the living room with an obsessive focus on something, the extreme cheapness, etc. It definitely put me into the story.

He started off with so much and he just wouldn't try to make it last! So frustrating. Of course, it was never his to begin with so I suppose it was fitting.

Loved some parts, got bored on some, didn't like some.

I thought it really picked up when they left Chicago but that may be because I was slowly going through the beginning and really got hooked at that point.

    The ending...... Sigh.

    Your thoughts?

Is following you the same as being friends??? I just followed you but I don't see anything about friends.
