I didn't have many friends in my adolescence - okay, none. I was cripplingly shy. But I had books, lots of them. Probably like many of you out there, I read at night (while I should have been sleeping) nestled either under the covers or curled in the tub, a pillow resting under my head. I felt most comfortable with girls a little like me: burnt around the edges but hungry for some warmth. I can't remember the titles now and these books certainly couldn't be in print. But I can pull up the girls' names: Josie and Miranda.

These days I have many many wonderful friends who enrich my life the way the soil feeds a linden tree. And with those friends I add other names, new characters that fill books and then fill me: Twosie, Isis, and many many more and those still to come. « less
