You take an action-packed video game, mix it up with a thought-provoking sci-fi anime and that's exactly what it feels like to read this book. The pacing was fast but with plenty of detail. The characters were just flawed enough to be very much human and sympathetic. I enjoyed being shown the two faces of the Full Metal Bitch - the one that public sees and the one we're shown later. It's hard to write a more descriptive review without giving away the good parts, but I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes scifi -- especially military scifi.

This has got to be one of my favorite book series. There is the constant abuse of sarcasm, and naturally flowing exchange of barbs, as sharp as Niko's blades. There is the dangerous, gritty and full of monsters (that aren't always as monstrous as one finds them at first glance but more often even more so) world. But I think it's the intense bond between the brothers that truly makes this book. Their worry, and fear, and desire to protect one another are not very well hidden under the constant bickering, somewhat childish name-calling and occasional ass-kicking (mostly done by 'superninja' Niko). I'd recommend this book to any fan of urban fantasy, or almost anyone with only requirement that they must have a healthy appreciation for sarcasm. And really how could I not love a book featuring a troll who lives under the Brooklyn Bridge?

I liked this one more and less than the first one. "Gone" had more of an emotional impact; confusion and terror of kids almost palpable. But "Hunger" definitely turned out darker as the consequences of everything that happend start to finally hit home. I still find the language a bit dry though and felt that there was even less focus on the main characters than before.
4 stars for the premise, 3 for execution.

Impossible to read in one sitting, yet impossible to put down. The cuteness overload doesn't sneak up but attacks with almost the first page. But it's gems like this:
'Physicist Sir Isaac Newton (who invented gravity during tests to discover why cats, when dropped, always land on their feet)...
that make this book a real pleasure.
