Hello!

My name is Liz and I'm 23 years old and in the northern part of Sweden, in a city called Luleå. I live together with my boyfriend Linus. I study to become an English and History teacher for Upper Secondary School.

I love to read books and to discover new books to read. Since I was 12 years old or something like that... more »

Hej! I notice you still come here, I only come back to Shelfari once in a while. Usually when I finish a book, then I leave. I've become addicted to facebook! But, since facebook is not working today, I've spent some time on Shelfari. I joined the 100 Book Challenge group a little while ago, once I had gone over the 50 books that you have to read for the 50 Book Challenge club. I'll never make it to 100 though. I just finished my 63rd book, with "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" and am now reading "Last Rituals by Yrsa Sigurdardottir an Icelandic author. I may put it aside for the time being because it just hasn't captured my attention. Alix got me "The Overcoat" and I bought "Beloved" at the library booksale.

Well, I just wanted to post you a note here for a change.

Take care, hope to talk to you soon and happy reading.

Hej! Jag mår bra. Hur mår du? :)
Now I'm sorry for not getting back to you earlier :( It is so much easier to talk on line, though I have more time to type properly and think things out. Also, I am becoming more addicted to Facebook and not spending as much time here. I ended up buying, "Redbreast" by Jo Nesbo. Right now I'm reading "Down Where the Moon is Small" by Richard Llewellyn and "Speaks the Nightbird" by Robert McCammon. "Speaks the Nightbird" is a 726 page hardcover book that weighs about 5 pounds which I borrowed from the library, so I decided to read that one here because the computer desk helps support it while I read it :) I read the other book when I'm not at the computer, but it's slow going and can't wait to read Jar City.

Your comment that vampires are supposed to be beautiful is a good one. In that case, I would liked to have become one when I was about 22 years old. I was slim then! :) If you go by the common theme that you can't change your appearance after you change into a vampire, then I certainly wouldn't want to become one now :D

Actually, American TV copies a lot of British shows. Idol started out in England, I think with a different title and Hell's Kitchen originated there as well as The Office. Your Hell's Kitchen comment was funny! :) Gordon Ramsey is really obnoxious!

Alix said your essay plan was very good and that the standards for writing it sounded very difficult. I'm glad she could help you out; she is pretty wonderful, isn't she!

Take care, happy reading and talk to you soon! :)

    Hej då! :)

Hej! Jag mår bra, hur mår du? :) Oh, you are so welcome, I love to write in Swedish! I would like to learn more. :) I am also glad to give you an opportunity to use your English :)

I usually buy books in paperback as well, but I agree sometimes there are books you just want to read right away. There is a book that just came out now by Jacqueline Carey called, "Naamah's Kiss" that I just might have to buy :) I just bought Jar City by Arnaldur Indridason at a local bookstore where they give you a 10% discount if you are a member, which Ali and I are. But the next day we happened to go to a large chain bookstore and they had a buy one get the other book half-off. I was so disappointed because they had Redbreast by Jo Nesbo and Jar City. I've wanted to read a Jo Nesbo book, and I see that you've read him as well. This way, I could have gotten Jar City priced half-off and it actually would have lowered the price of Redbreast. Oh well, I guess it's better to support your local bookstores than give big business your money :)

Reading about Russian politicians has to be fairly interesting; I think their whole history is pretty fascinating. I'm kinda interested in the Czar period, myself. "Not Your Mother's Vampire" sounds pretty funny :D The variety of vampire books are immense! It seems there is a little bit of everyone that wouldn't mind being a vampire, I mean like, who wouldn't want to live forever! :) I think that's why vampire stories are so popular.

The Ice People doesn't sound familiar, but they do sound interesting. I like fantasy, romance etc. I will definitely borrow them from the library. Thanks for the recommendation :)

Do they have a Swedish version of "So You Think You Can Dance", or is it the American version? I know they have a Canadian and an Australian version of the show. The Australian version is sooo good. The Canadian version is only OK. We've watched only one season of "American Idol" and are now watching "Australian Idol" which has been really good. I think it's much better than the American version, I like the hosts better.

I look forward to hearing from you and talking with you on the chat as well :) It's fun here too, but not as immediate as chatting on line. Take care and happy reading to you too! :)

Hej! Jag mar bra :) Hur mar du? Ali isn't home and can't tell me how to cut and paste to spell the Swedish ( Svenska?) greetings properly, so I apologize, but I wanted to attempt to write in your language instead of being an "Ugly American". You know, someone who expects others to only write or speak in English.

I can't get Camilla Lackberg's books in the library yet, but I can buy "The Ice Princess" on Amazon in hardcover. I think I'll wait awhile until the price comes down first. There seems to have been a mix up at which library I was supposed to pick up the other book I reserved, so I don't even know what book it was or if they are still holding it for me. Or maybe, I'm the one that's all mixed up :P

I finished "The Abominable Man", one of the Martin Beck books and started "Cop Killers". After that book, all I will have left to finish the series will be "The Locked Room". Someday, I will re-read them in order because the stories have jumped around and all continuity has been broken up for me. It's driving me crazy :) Before "The Abominable Man", I finished "The Lovers" by John Connolly and "Inkheart". Both were quite good. "The Lost Symbol" was pretty good too, though you will find a few small plot holes if you look closely enough. I guess that's true with most books though, especially modern ones.

Ali is reading a Nick Hornby book called "Juliet, Naked" which I really want to read, but don't think I'll have time because it is only a seven day rental from the library. Boo to seven
day books! I like the Swedish system of new releases being fourteen days. That's much, much better :) Sorry you have to spend so much time on Russian politicians and vampires. Don't Russian politicians or any other politician for that matter have things in common with vampires? :) Just joking! :D How long do you have to finish your papers?

The TV program we watched was, "So You Think You Can Dance". It's one of my favorite shows. It is a reality show, which isn't something I normally watch, but this is different. They have auditions for the top 20 dancers in the country - some auditions are funny because the people are so bad; but on the whole the show is serious about getting really talented dancers. When they finally get the top 20 dancers, the kids get to work with some of the best choreographers in the country and their dance routines are pretty fabulous! The public gets to vote on their favorite dancer every week. Last season, the contestant that our family wanted to win, won :) Sorry I'm so long winded today :P

Take care and happy reading to you as well :D

Happy to hear that the presentation went alright :) Sorry you have to read 3 books for the next lesson. I remember reading The Crucible by Arthur Miller for class. It's a really good play, hope that you enjoy it! Just out of curiosity, how are the 3 books connected, do they have a common theme between them?

The poem discussion went really well actually. I feel like I got a lot out of reading them. I really enjoyed My Last Duchess by Browning. Do you like him? Tennyson's poems were good too, especially the Lady of Shallot. Tennyson has gotten me really fascinated with Arthurian legend. Well that and the BBC show Merlin. Have you ever read the "Once and Future King" T.H. White, I really want to read that now. Maybe if I ever get American Gods we could consider reading Once and Future King.

I feel bad that I didn't just go to Barnes and Noble to get American Gods. Downtown we have this awesome bookstore, and typically they are great about ordering you books, but this is getting ridicules. I went down on Wednesday, and they haven't called me yet :( If you want to start it I would totally understand.. Where do you typically get your books from?

Hej! I was going to respond in Swedish, How are you and I'm fine, but I forgot the way Ali taught me to do it :( My memory ain't what it used to be! :) Sounds like you have a lot of reading to do! I can't wait to find a Camilla Lackberg novel, either at the library or to buy. She sounds like a good author. The other books you mentioned sound good too. I'm going to the library today to take back "The Lost Symbol" and I also got a notice that I could pick up a book I had reserved a copy of. I don't remember what book it was, because I reserved it at the same time as "The Lost Symbol" and that was a couple of months ago.

I also have a lot of books to get through. I just got the last three Martin Beck books I need to finish the whole series. They've all been so good :) They are a little dated, but it gives you a good idea of what the times were like and in a way, they are timeless... if that makes any sense. I have the new book to pick up, which will probably be only a seven day rental and I just bought two Arnaldur Indridason books, which I can't wait to get to.

If you ever get a chance, I highly recommend John Connolly's books. He is an Irish author, yet he always writes about an American character named Charlie Parker. His books are mysteries, or crime novels, but the supernatural is always a factor in the plots. In fact they are downright creepy! The first book is, "Every Dead Thing" and it is one of my favorites :)

Sorry I took so long to get back to you :( Anyway, I called both my daughter and husband brats because they were going to start a TV program they knew I wanted to see, without me! They couldn't wait just a few more minutes for me to finish my note. How rude is that? Just joking! :)

Take care and happy reading! :)

Hej! Hur mår du? Ali taught me how to say and write this greeting in Swedish. I just finished "The Lost Symbol" by Dan Brown. It was pretty good. I had reserved a copy of this book a couple of months ago and there were over 100 people on the waiting list before me! I like the philosophy behind his books. This one was as interesting as his other ones. It makes you think.

I don't think anyone really likes to do housework! :)

My family is starting to watch a TV show I want to see without me! Brats! :) Talk to you soon and happy reading!:)

Hi! Glad that the essay is still interesting you, and that the plan is working out. The book that you mentioned sounds good, particularly about the Babylonian female demon. Wasn't Vlad the Impaler rumored to be one of the first as well?

No I've not read "Midnight Sun" either. It was something that I'd just heard about, but had not the inclination to read myself.
Just finished reading Brandvägg or Firewall by Henning Mankell, it was my favourite story by him.

Life has been hectic this past week. Been applying to grad school (for library sciences), which has been super stressful. How has your week been?? At least I have the time to bake a cake today. I don't know about you but whenever I'm stressed out I love to bake! :) What do you do to make yourself less stressed out?

Can't wait to make pizza, and the dough! This is so sweet of you to translate the recipe and everything!! I will sign up for the website! Thank you for telling me about it.

    Hejdå, talk to you soon!

Hi again! Actually to get back to the topic of reading, I'm reading Inkheart and am really enjoying that book. However, I got a call from the library that "The Lost Symbol" by Dan Brown was in and since it's only a seven day book, I'll probably have to start reading that now. I don't remember from your shelf if you've ever read, "The DaVinci Code" or "Angels and Demons" by Dan Brown. Anyway, I thought they were both good, so I wanted to read this one. I hate to put down Inkheart though, I'm almost done with it and I want to find out what happens! I don't read as fast as you do, so I don't think I could get through both. Unless, I sat down and did nothing but read! :) But now as I have two feet, my husband probably wants me to do something around the house :( Ugh, I hate doing housework! Not that I can really do much, but I must do something, I guess :P

Hope you feel better soon and happy reading :)

Hi! Sorry you caught a nasty cold :( I hope you feel better soon. It seems like everybody is sick these days. I don't think I am going to escape my daughter's cold, I feel like I'm coming down with it now. Oh, well.

Sorry I couldn't spell Lulea as it should be spelled. My keyboard doesn't have the international symbols on it. Ali says there is a way to change it, but I don't have a clue how to do it! Where I live, Buffalo is a beautiful city as well. There are some Frank Lloyd Wright buildings and a famous parks system called Olmstead. A beautiful building called the Sullivan Building that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright unfortunately, was torn down a couple of decades ago. It was supposed to be the ultimate office building designed for workers. Now, you can only see what it looked like in pictures and drawings. Unfortunately, in the name of forward progress and short-sighted politicians, they tore the building down. This city has done incredibly stupid things, like put motorways through the Olmstead Park system, dividing it up, tearing down other famous buildings. The beginnings of the Erie Canal started down at the harbor to the Great Lakes and they wanted to just build over it to put up some stupid store! It is so frustrating! Buffalo is known as the butt of jokes in our country :( We used to have a major steel industry. They made Fords and Chevy's and everything else that goes with the auto industry. Obviously, that fell apart! Now we're known as the "Rust Belt".
The Buffalo Bills football team went to the Super Bowl four times and lost each time. Our weather here is cold in winter. That seems to be the thing that makes everyone else in the country think this is an horrible place to live! Like everyone could or even would want to live down "South" or on the "West Coast"! It is actually a beautiful place to live. The city still has famous buildings and there are a lot of Victorian houses. You can use the winter to snowmobile, ski, ice skate and the summer to do lots of boating, beaches and fishing. And actually now that the steel industry has left, our air is cleaner and we have lots of fresh water. Less traffic than other big cities too! But nobody else sees that! All national commentary and even commentary from Toronto, Canada, thinks we're a joke! They attack us personally as people, it's ridiculous! Sorry I went off on a rant :P

I'm glad they used the same actors in The Girl Who Played With Fire. I can't wait to see the movie!

Take care, yourself and again sorry I went off on a rant. :)

    Happy reading :)

Hi! Don't worry about it, I understand :) I know school can be all time consuming, crazy and stressful, yet wonderful all at the same time.

I'm fine as well, my foot is getting better all the time. I can walk in the house without a crutch or cane, but need one when I go out because of steps and uneven surfaces. Yay, I am a biped once again! :) I still have a limp so my doctor sent me to physical therapy twice a week. That's no fun :( Thanks for asking. My daughter has a nasty cold, I hope I don't get sick!

My daughter is reading "Firewall" by Henning Mankell now and Lulea was mentioned in the book! I thought that was interesting :) Are the same actors playing Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomqvist in The Girl Who Played with Fire? I hope so, because I thought they were good as well. I'm glad you liked it. It will probably be a while before we will be able to see
    the movie.

Good luck with your essays :)

How is the essay planning? You're reading a lot of books on Gorbachev! Are you still enjoyng your history essay topic?
I was thinking about the Vampire myth and how it has changed. There is definitely a transition in the thought about vampires. In Dracula he is a soulless, evil thing who cannot go out in the sunlight. In the case of Anne Rice's vampires they have progressed. Those vamps think about good and evil and whether they have souls or not. I also believe that Lestat eventually was able to go out during the day? It seems to me that when vampires became more humanized like in Twilight, that was when they could go in the sun. I may be way off base, so yeah... How do you feel the vampire myth has changed, from Dracula to Twilight?

Edward really is too perfect, and it is possible! He seems totally unreal. Did you ever start the leaked manuscript "Midnight Sun? Which is the Twilight story told from Edward's perspective. I'm looking forward to the movie, I'm curious about what they did to the story.

I'd love the pizza recipe! :) Do you make the dough as well? No I don't have MSN, sorry. It would be fun to talk to you on that as well. :) What is the web address for it?

    Happy reading and essay writing!

Margaret Atwood is a really interesting author. She just writes about the strangest of things, that I'm not sure other people would think to write about. Her book Cat's Eye was good but odd. That is a lot that you have to write! Have you started them yet?

I will have to read "The Tale of the Body Thief" sometime. I guess by the time I had gotten to that book, I was tired of reading the series.
I think that I may have preferred the Twilight movie to the book. I guess you could say that I'm not all that romantic of a person, and just how Edward is with her is kind of nauseating. Also the writing quality of the stories gets worse. If I had to pick I would be on Team Jacob as well, he was a much more interesting character, and less of a stalker too! :) Why didn't you like the following books as much?

That is awesome that you and Linus dressed up as Mulder and Scully for a Halloween-party!! Does he like the X-Files as well? Did you guys get pictures of your costumes? Halloween is coming up soon, this year I'd love to be Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter. I love her radish earrings. Do you have any Halloween plans?

We really should find an online Monopoly. Looked on Facebook, and didn't find any. It would be a lot of fun! Glad the pizza turned out great. Is it easy to make? The filet of beef was really good, as were the carrots but never ended up making the wine sauce.

No big about it taking longer to answer. I totally understand with school and everything.

Hope all is well, and that you're staying healthy. It's always nice to hear from you too!

Hej! Did you have your discussion about A Handmaid's Tale yet? What did you think of A Handmaid's Tale? It seemed really strange when I read it, but then it was quite a few years ago. Don't be nervous your going to do great! How long is your C-essay to be? For the literature course are you going to discuss a theme or compare two of the novels that you have read?

Alice went alright, we had to write an essay about it for friday. Luckily it was a short one, just 1-2 pages long. I'm nervous about how the professor is going to grade it. As I've never really wrote a paper on literary analysis before, not entirely sure how it went.
Frankenstein was ok. For whatever reason I could not loose myself in the story, it was a struggle to get through. Hopefully you will like it better! By Anne Rice I have read Interview, The Vampire Lestat, and Queen of the Damned. I heard that Tale of the Body Thief was good, but not as good as the rest of the series. What did you think of Tale of the Body Thief? Her new books just sound weird though! :)
Did you see the Twilight movie? Twilight is probably the only one in the series that I would reread. Last week a new television series started over here called "The Vampire Diaries" which is loosely based on a series of books. It is just weird seeing these books that I loved as a kid made into this tv show. They were written in the 90's by L.J. Smith, now I want to reread them. The resurgence of people being interested in vampire stories is fascinating.
That is awesome loving the X-Files! It is a great series, love Gillian Anderson! Did you see the new movie that was made? That is great that you wanted to be an FBI-agent! When I was younger I wanted to be an actual vampire slayer, and dressed up as Buffy for Halloween!

If there is an online version that we could play that would excellent!

Happy birthday to your fiance! Did the pizza turn out ok?
No I've have not made anything too exciting. Tonight I'm making a filet of beef with a wine sauce and braising some carrots. Should be good, hopefully!!

Sorry it has taken me so long to write back. Work and school are preoccupying way too much of time :( Is it winter break yet??? Just can't wait for this semestre to be over with!

Hi! Oh, I am so excited to hear that there is a new Wallander book! :D Let's hope it doesn't take a couple of years to be translated over here. I wish I knew Swedish! If there was one gift I could wish for, it would be to automatically know any language. Genie in a bottle, where are you? :) If I could be granted three wishes, the gift of language would be one of them, the power to heal people would be second and the third (of course) would be to have wealth. Then you could travel the world and use all three powers and still have time to read! :) Just being whimsical, what three wishes would you like to be granted?

I just started "The Generals" this morning. It's about a man who is being court- martialed by the military on a small unnamed island in a temperate zone. "A group of civilized, intelligent men took over the island, we learn, and begin to build an ideal state." Anyway, it seems to be a parable on human nature... The story is told in the format of written transcripts as if from the trial. It's a bit odd, but seems like it has possibilities (maybe). It doesn't even look like it's ever been read before!

I'm glad that the Gorbachev essay will be an interesting project for you. He does seem to be an interesting person and the times were definitely fascinating - the "Cold War", the end of it and all that. It's funny that there are more vampire books than ones about Gorbachev, an historical figure! :) Will you let me know how your writing is coming along?

Well take care of yourself and happy reading :)

Hi! Will the essay you are writing about Gorbachev and the Soviet Union be as enjoyable as the Vampire comparisons? The Vampire comparisons sound like they would be more fun to write, however Gorbachev seems like it will at least be interesting. It sounds like more work and research though. They definitely are polar opposites in topic!

My daughter brought home from her school library, "The Terrorists" by Maj Sjowell and Per Wahloo and "The Generals" by Per Wahloo for me to read. Since I love Martin Beck, I'm going to read that book first. Apparently, it is the tenth and last book of the Story of Crime. I now only have three more to read after this to finish all ten. I hate reading things out of order, but since I got some from the library and bought some it was impossible to do. I hope they have the other three I am looking for at her library. These books are old; like first editions that came out in the U.S. and look like they have hardly ever been read. "The Generals" seem like it may be kind of an odd story, but I'll try it anyway. :)

Take care and happy reading :)

Hej, hur mår du? Hope that is correct! Did your discussion of "Beloved" go alright this Thursday? I would love to read Beloved someday, hopefully in a couple of weeks. Do you have to write any papers for Beloved and if so what are they about? For Monday and Wednesday we have to read "Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass". I'm looking forward to rereading them! My professor always talks about time, and how the Victorians were obsessed with it. So yeah it will be interesting to read them not just as a kids book, but through the narrow focus of time, and what really makes the story move along. That basically is what our response paper is about anyway! On a side note this weekend I'll probably start reading "The Time Machine. It's what I want to be reading the most right now!

Classic Horror Stories are amazing! Did you ever read "Frankenstein"? I read that when I was super little. Of the three books my favourite was Interview with the Vampire. When I read Dracula I was a bit disappointed with the diary format. Have you read anything else by Anne Rice? As for Twilight did you like it? I thought that the first two books were good, but not any other in the series.
For me Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my favourite television series of all time. There are plenty of great new shows out there, but none will ever compare to that. I collected trading cards, clothes, action figurines, read the books. I was obsessed, even knowing dialogue from certain episodes. Have you ever felt that way about a series before?

That is great that you are going to play Sheep and Wolf! It was really fun to play, and pretty easy to figure out. Though I almost always lost!! :) Now I really want to play Monopoly, perhaps there is an online version out there??

Have you been cooking anything exciting lately??

Hi! Don't worry about responding late and it wasn't that long either! :) I know with school starting and papers to write that it is not always easy to do other things.
I'm glad "Beloved" was good; the way you described the story makes me want to read it sometime. I have read "A Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood, but not "The Butcher Boy" by Patrick McCabe.

I definitely will read Stoker's Dracula. My daughter just read it over the summer. You did pick an essay topic that sounds like fun! If you have to write an essay, it might as well be something that is enjoyable. Have you ever heard of the "Vampire Diaries"? They were a series of Young Adult books by L. J. Smith. They made a TV mini - series based on the books, which we just watched tonight. The books were pretty good if I recall, and the show seemed alright. One of the bad vamps was played by Ian Sommerhalder who was on the first season of LOST.

I just finished reading "McNally's Luck by Lawrence Sanders, it was OK. It was a mystery that was amusing, light and a pretty easy read. It had a cat that was kidnapped (or "catnapped", as they called it in the book) and held for ransom for $50,000. More plot involvement than that, etc. :)

I agree with you that it must have been very difficult to play Mikael Blomqvist because of all the high expectations that people had for the character. I do think that Mikael Nyqvist did a very good job with the role :) It's interesting to know that he is one of Sweden's most famous actors, probably like Tom Cruise is here. :)

Ah, my husband is getting out of bed now, so I have to get off the computer. I'll talk to you soon, take care and happy reading! :D
