“This book is more likely to be enjoyed by fans of historical fiction and medieval studies that traditional hard sci-fi, as the vast majority of the story takes place in the 14th Century. The setting is very reminiscent of Connie Willis's Doomsday Book, and Flynn has clearly put meticulous research into his novel. Flynn writes in a highly intellectual style, to the point of perhaps being exclusionary to some readers (i.e. frequent use of untranslated phrases from German, Latin, and a host of other languages, quips about carbon control rods in nuclear reactors, etc.). A great read in my opinion, but be prepared to use Babel Fish and a dictionary if you are unfamiliar with foreign languages and archaic chivalry related terms.”
