Reading [is] my escape and my comfort, my consolation, my stimulant of choice: reading for the pure pleasure of it, for the beautiful stillness that surrounds you when you hear an author's words reverberating in your head. Paul Auster

There are a thousand thousand reasons to live this life, every one of them sufficient. ...more »

Hmmm...I didn't even think about The Eyre Affair for satire, that sounds like a good possibility. Right now I have picked out The Princess Bride which, if I get to, is extra points for the fairy tale tag. Lots of Nora Roberts books are doubled up for romance and romantic suspense and her new book comes out on Tuesday (Tribute) so it will be my first multiple tag read! i thought scifi would be challenging too but The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy (which I have never read) takes up science fiction, scifi, and sci-fi!!! If you haven't read it you might want to consider it! :)

I just re-read your profile and it touched my heart. Congrats on your daughter's
success. I understand about missing your daughter - I was in that position for
many years until 4 years ago when hubby and I decided to move to Fl to be
near our children. Two years ago, she bought a house a block away from me!!!!

I love Laurie R King and I noticed by your shelf, I am behind in her books. I have
added them to my list for bookstores and library. Thanks. Carol

I lived in Oregon when I was about 12. We only lasted 6 months. We were in Portland, the Gresham area. We went through the locks on a paddle boat thing. We also saw Willamette Falls & some fish hatchery one long day. Was kinda cool. The falls were so pretty. I am commenting on this because I just now noticed your location. Thought I would share.

The drought is atrocious. I'm replanting half the corn today. No need of water rationing as we have an underground spring at the foot of a mountain which won't run dry, ever. Getting enough water into the garden to keep everything alive has been a chore, though, and what's alive doesn't look at all happy.

Hi U.W. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Sounds like you've got a great collection. As for my wife the librarian, she's actually a library assistant on the reference desks. She's the younger lady with long brown hair on the second and third floors, but you won't see her for something like three months because she's on maternity leave.
If you frequent the new releases then I'm sure you've seen her, especially if you've noticed a very pregnant bookish lady behind the desk.
Anyway, thanks for being so active in Bibliophiles. I'm a bit of a novice at collecting, but I do have my fun.

I'm sorry -- I don't know who was responsible for the "If God is watching" quote. I write down quotes all the time, and if there is a source, I always credit it. Sometimes the source is anonymous in which case I don't have it quoted. So all I know about that one is that I didn't say it, but I wish I had! :)

Well hello, fellow Eugenian! Glad to hear from you. I teach language arts and literature at North Eugene High School and am also an avid reader. So many teachers say they don't have time to read from their personal interests during the school year; I say that's hogwash. What about those morning hours on the weekend? Or that beautiful hour before bedtime?
Anyway, I like your shelf and am amazed by the collection you have. I heard about Shelfari last year from my wife who works at the Eugene Public Library and have been a bit of a dabbler ever since. I'm also big into Pacific Northwest lit and appreciate authors such as Palahniuk, Brautigan, Alexie, Robin Cody, and Eugene's own Kate Willhelm. I'm also a bit of a collector when I've got the time and money.
So, sure, coffee sounds nice, and I think I'll check out Book Tag or whatever the group is called. It sounds interactive and intriguing. Oh, if you yourself collect, you might check out a group I administer called Bibliophiles. Feel free to join.

Hi. I've been browsing your shelf and find much in common, plus many that I'll now add to my tbr list. And after reading your review of _To Kill a Mockingbird_, I have to request a friendship with you. : ) It is my favorite book and one of the few I could read again and again and never tire of. In fact, I just finished it (again) last weekend. Hope to hear from you...

Dropping by to tell you how much I enjoyed Atticus! It was wonderful & kept me guessing until the end. I found myself not liking the characters at first, but as I read more & began to understand them, they grew on me, especially Atticus. What a wonderful tale of parental love & hope! Thanks for the great recommendation! =)

No, there is no manual; it's like parenting. You figure it out as you go and trust what you value and what you want to take route. :-) You already have the key requirements: a genuine interest in the group and you regularly show up. Peace. ~Z

Happy Memorial Day. Thank you so much for all of your great suggestions on the poetry readings. I'm definitely going to check out that group and get into the daily readings. I'm also eager to head to the library, tomorrow, with some titles in hand to check out. I'll let you know what I think. I must say I'm astounded by the extent of your shelf!!! You've read so much! I noticed you're also reading Best American Short Stories of 2007. I've read 4 of the stories so far and am not blown away, to be honest. I'd love to hear your take on it.

Congrats to your daughter on her recent graduation! How exciting for her and her entire family! I was once interested in medicine so I know what kind of dedication and determination she has. I didn't have it and had to settle for chemistry. ha

My mother lives in Puyallup, WA and when I visit we try to make a trip down to the Oregon coast. May I just say that I SOOOO understand your love of reading there.

I'm a music lover, also. Les Mis is one of my all-time favorites, as well. The production as well as the book. In fact, I must say the production of it actually opened my eyes up to Javier in a way that I never had, previously. I always saw him as the villain. In the show, however, I was able to see him as the tragic character that he was. I did, however, cringe at your reference to Willie Nelson. :-)

Again, thanks for your condolences and your help in the poetry realm. I'll certainly get back with you on it!

Hi U W!! Forgive me for not checking in sooner, but I've been a little under the weather. I've ordered my bookswap book, & chosen Atticus by Ron Hanson. So many of your selections sounded good that it was hard to choose. =) It should arrive next week & I'm looking forward to reading it.

I hope you enjoyed your visit w/ your daughter & had a great time!

isn't it strange how books track you down and make you read them? (not my own words - a quote!) I asked you about that book because the cover & the description looked interesting & upon checking it out on Amazon, I found it that it is about Rawicz....and this book was already on my to-read list! thanks! so now I really have to read it!

Your avatar shows up on my home page with almost 300 books in common! One in particular is about the Delaney sisters,"Having Our Say," which I thoroughly enjoyed and was lucky enough to see the touring version of the broadway show when it came to our area.
