“I cannot, for the life of me, understand why this book is so popular. Having heard reviews both positive and negative, I went into it with an open mind and a determination to give it a fair shot. Almost from the beginning, I knew I was in for disappointment. Twilight is a hideously unreadable piece of emo-teen angst. There is no plot to speak of, other than Bella's longing for Edward until the last 100, pages or so. Bella quickly proves herself to be a vapid, emotional doormat, while Edward is a passive agressive stalker-type (seriously, if a guy did half the things Edward did in this book, I'd have slapped him with a restraining order), and it all gets passed off under the stereotypes of "longing" and "suspense" and "romance." I cannot understand how it is considered great storytelling or a love story for the younger generation. Twilight also destroys the vampire mythos. I am all for twists and a unique perspective on an old legend, but Meyer's is just too over-the-top. By now, anyone reading this review has heard the basics: They can come out during the day !? Then of course, there's the whole sparkly vampire issue. I'm not even going to touch that one. To her credit, I will admit that Carlyle's struggle to break away from vampiric tradition and become a kinder type of vamp was fascinating, and I wish Meyer had explored that more, as I wish she had explored Alice's story. I'm sure she does in later books, but I am not going to endure them just for a few details here and there.”
