Welcome to my book shelf! I've always judged a book by it's cover! Okay, maybe I don't actually "judge" it, but quite often I "choose my next book by it's cover. Can't help it. The books either attract me or they don't! I just got a... more »

I heard really good reviews about this book. But for some reason, I got about half way through and ended up picking up other books and never getting through it. Finally, my Mom came to visit and I gave it to her. Sometimes when books get good reviews and I can't get "into" them, I figure it just must be me and my mood at the time. I think this was one of those that was just me.

David Sedaris books are so funny. He writes memoir essays of his life growing up with his parents, sisters & brother & people he meets, places he lives. He is so hysterical. I would love to just be able to meet him. He cracks me up. I think this is my third David Sedaris book.

  • Divided Minds: Twin Sisters and Their Journey Through Schizophrenia
    • Rated 3 stars

Memoir written by identical twin girls from each of their points of view. One sister carrying a diagnosis of Schizophrenia throughout her life and the other sister trying to cope with it. Touching story. The sister with the mental illness, Pammy, explains the way she feels when she goes through her episodes so well, that I could kind of understand this condition in a way I've never been able to before. A severe mental illness such as schizophrenia is so life halting, it is just hard to comprehend.

  • the legacy of beulah land
    • Rated 5 stars

This is the third book of the Beulah Land series.(written in the 70's& 80's by Lonnie Coleman) I loved all three of them. I got espcially attached to the families. From the first book through this one, it starts in the early 1800's and ends sometomes in the 1890's. It takes place in the South which we all know is very troubled at that time, through the Civil War and recovering from it and the way live changes. It iw very much a Gone With The Wind story but a little more sexually daring than just say "I don't give a damn." at the end. IK feel happy to have completed all three books, not all at once because the second two were not easy to find, but I finally got them through PBS.com. At the same time, I feel sad that it is over. Like letting go of friends. There is also a movie that was made in the 80's with some pretty big stars who were not big stars yet. The movie covers the first two books. I found that on Amazon.com.

  • Sickened: The Memoir of a Munchausen by Proxy Childhood
    • Rated 5 stars

This was a really good book. Nonfiction about a girl who's mother spent so many years telling her how sickly she was, she even believed it. Bother of her parents were emotionally and sometimes physically abusive and the author is not able to really sort it all out in her mind until she is an adult. I was really moved & disturbed. But the book was well written.

  • Mother's Day
    • Rated 4 stars

I really enjoyed this true crime read. It is the story of a mother with six children but she definitely had some major psychotic issues. Of course she chases all her husbands away and raises her kids (all born in 60's & 1970) by herself. But, she is abusive, controlling and most definitely confused. She believes her daughters are possesed by Satan. Her yourngest daughter lives to tell authorities of the abuse and explains how her two sisters were murdered. The youngest daughter, Terry Knoll actually is in an interview on a tv show by Cold Case Files I think. But I read somewhere that in the early 2000's she actually died at only 32 yrs old, which I find really sad after surviving so many years of abuse.

  • Love Walked in
    • Rated 3 stars

Interesting story twist. It is a love story of a 30-something unmarried girl who is in love with old movies and old days actors/actresses when the man of her dreams walks into her life. Only she was unaware of her true dreams. She ends up caring for his eleven year old daughter. This is a love story of all different kinds of love.

  • Good Harbor: A Novel
    • Rated 3 stars

I read other Anita Diamant books, such as Dog Town and The Red Tent. The Red Tent was amazing and I was really into the characters. Not so much with Good Harbor. Not that the book was not good, it was okay. But I probably expected more of a masterpiece after The Red Tent. This was by no means close to that. It was just simply a nice story about women, about friendship, parenting, about mistakes and relationships. It was just a nice story. Nothing breathtaking.

Memoir by Elizabeth Edwards. Only a few days into it. So far, so good. I saw her on Oprah which made me interested in reading her story.
