I must protest. American literature is not by hack formulaic writers. Try some Flannery O'Connor, or an early feminist writer Kate Chopin. Please don't lump them all together. Have you read William Faulkner's 'As I lay Dying'? You will recognize many scenes in there, because it has been imitated a lot by lesser writers. There are a great many British hack writers, also.
