Hey, it's me. So, I'm on like the third book in the "Miles" series and Miles has yet to be born, but the series is pretty cool. I just realized the books were written out of order, so I put them in order of Miles age, seems like the best way to go about it. I'm gonna start "In Cold Blood" very soon to, to read along with the series, just for a little variety. Did I tell you I recently say George Carlin do his comedy routine. It was fantastic and bitter and angry and funny all at the same time. George is one of my favorite comedians, along with the dark Bill Hicks. I've been playing the newer Zelda on the Wii. Does your boyfriend have that one? It's probably the best wii game so far, I played through it over a year ago and felt it was time to revisit it. I'm low on money these days, so no new games, must just replay old ones for a while. Are you done with Dune and are you gonna read the other 5 books in that series? I know his son Brian Herbert has tried to keep the Dune story going, but I don't have any of his son's work. Seems like it would be a crappy knock-off. What's your opinion, is his son's work worth the trouble of reading? Did I tell you, I tried to read Twain's "Conneticut Yankee..." book and found it quite boring, so I didn't finish it. That's the first Twain book that I didn't complete. I see you've been adding more books, you are getting close to that 20,000 mark that your friend gave you. My mom went to Pheonix to visit some friends and I got two books out of the deal. One) Seeker by jack McDevitt, which is like book three of some series, which means I'm on the lookout for books one and two and two) A bigger Silverberg book that I'd never come across called "At Winter's End". It seems really cool. OK, gonna go for now, talk to you soon, Bryan.

Aase, that makes me feel a little better. ;)
Have you read everything that's on your shelf or is it a collection of some things that you haven't gotten to yet? Wish I could speed read because there's so much I want to cover but alas. I did get the uCircuits book you have listed as a favorite to check it out - figured you read a lot of them so it must be good. Perused it enough to see it's more about analog circuits than digital designs which I thought it would be but good ref book.

Hey, so before I start the big Bujold series, I tried reading Twain's "A Conneticut Yankee..." and found it quite dry, so I didn't even finish it. I got about halfway and found it not to be even close to his best work. Have you read it? So I moved on to Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe" which I liked quite a bit. I had no idea about the level of canabalism in the book (not by the main character) and that Robinson spent over 25 years on this island alone and that it was published in 1719. It's almost 300 years old. I love classic literature. Now, I'm finishing that short story collection edited by Orson Scott Card called "Masterpieces" and like 80% of the stories are quite enjoyable. I've listed some of the best stories from it on the book club page. I have about 45 pages left of it, then, then, then, I'm gonna start the series, first off with the 200 year prequal called "Falling Free". I have alot of the omnibus's of the series that combines 2 novels and one novella from "Borders to Infinity", so all together, I have the whole series. I'll read like four books in the series, then a literature book, then four more and so on till the series is done. How is Dune? Are you gonna read all six books in the series? I have all six plus this other series you may have read by him that is composed of "The Jesus Incident", "The Lazarus Effect" and the posthumous "The Ascension Factor" that take place on this water world Pandora. Are you familiar with that series by Herbert (it's written in collaberation with Bill Ransom). My mom found three books for me and I'll get them tomorrow. They are Silverberg's "At Winter's End", Jack McDevitt's "Seeker" which is part of a series, but I think it can be read by itself (I hope) and Poul Anderson's "Harvest of Stars". Yeah! I also found a new L.E. Modesitt Jr. sci-fi novel in paperback, so I picked that one up. It's called "The Elysium Commision" or something like that. Ok, I'm gonna go fix some cinnamon strusel muffins. Twelve of them, for sure. I hope not to eat more than five of em today. We'll see. Hope your doing well and I'll talk to you soon. P.S. I watched another remake of Night of the Living Dead, this one supposedly was in 3D at some point, not my version, and I tell you, it was terrible. Truly a bad movie. I can't believe I watched the whole thing. Next up is this werewolf movie called "Skinwalkers" Hope this one is better. Later, Bryan.

Regarding Bryans comment on only 50% of people read for pleasure a quote from Ivan Illich which I find quite interesting regarding this topic.
"Western social reality has put aside faith in bookishness as it has put aside Christianity. Since the book has ceased to be the ultimate reason for their existence, educational institutions have proliferated. The screen, the medium and "communication" have surreptitiously replaced the page, letters, and reading... The picture and its caption, the comic book, the table, the box, and graph, photographs, outlines, and integration with other media demand from the user textbook habits which are contrary to those cultivated in scholastic readership."
(Ivan IIlich, In The Vineyard of the Text)
Mass communication has it's drawback when it comes to encouraging people to read.

    Hi Aasemoon,
I checked out your "A's". I don't know if I have ever meet anyone who has read so much of Aristotle's works. I have skimmed and read it a bit. I prefer Plato who I have studied a bit. I feel a bit obliged to read Aristotle some because of his writings being part of the historic roots of how we organize thought and science.

    Hi Aasemoon,
I just got through looking at what books we have in common. I thought oh, what does it mean to have books in common with someone who has 16,700 plus books. However it was fun to see the connections. I'm working with xml too, at an Ecology Research center. Maybe you had an xml Class. Also, fun to see how much you like the older American classics.

Ok, all this talk about series, I've decided to drop everything and read my biggest series, the Lois McMaster Bujold "Miles Vorkosigan" series of like 13 books. I'll put it on the book club page for the hardcore people who will join me. Later, Bryan.

Have you noticed that this site is now allowing users to ask opinions of books. I've been trying to answer as many as I can. So, I do have a subscription to Playboy and in the newest issue, they report a study that shows 50% of people 18-24 do not read for pleasure ever! For ages 25-34, the percentage is 40%. Is it just me, or is that amazingly high. Half of these people never read at all. Like my younger sister and her husband. They never read, and it seems like they are proud of it by saying things like "Why would I want to read when I can just watch TV". It is truly saddening. Luckily I've gotten around 10 of my better friends to go from not a reader to an avid reader, just because I was able to pick out books I thought they would like, and most of the time, they respond "I never knew this kind of writing was out there, do you have some more books for me to read". I'm rather proud I was able to create some readers, but I can't get to em all. Geez, 50%. Our culture must suffer negative effects from this. What are your thoughts? We seem to be on the opposite end and read alot. I would give up alot before my books, they must travel with me wherever I go. So I read what is supposed to be Philip K Dicks worst book for perspective, called "Vulcan's Hammer" and you know what, it wasn't half bad. I kinda liked it. It was short, so I read it in one evening, but it had some cool ideas and retained alot of Dickian themes of paranoia and corruption. I'm now reading another short book that has two novella's by Joan D. Vinge called "Heaven's Chronicles" and the first story is awesome so far. I think she's the wife of Vernor Vinge. I have two of his that I want to read before too long, they both won Hugo's and take place in the same universe, just at different times. They are called "A Fire Upon the Deep" and "A Deepness in the Sky". Have you read these ones? So you said you may read the Dune series again. How many times have you read then? I need to read this series, for sure. You know what series is calling to me most right now, its the Miles Vorkosigan series by Lois McMaster Bujold. It's like 13 books long with some short stories spread between the books. I'm hoping to start it within like 4 months. Are you familiar with this series and have you read it. It's supposed to be awesome and like four books from the series won Hugo awards. Cherryh's Foreigner series is calling to me as well as Peter F. Hamilton's Night's Dawn series. Good Golly, too much to choose from, can't think that far ahead, one book at a time. You with your 20,000 ebooks must have an even harder time deciding. Have you read the six book Thomas Covenant series? Like I said, I read the first trilogy in high school but would like to go through the six book one soon too. Ugh, what to do. Ok for now, talk to you later, Bryan.

Hey. Hope all's well. Saw THIS DAY ALL GODS DIE. The Gap Into Ruin on your shelf. How is it? I did see it at Borders here but didn't pick it up. Perhaps you could help me make up my mind...is it worth buying or would you recommend it as a book that should be borrowed from a library, read and then returned?

P.S. I also gotta read some more short stories from that "Masterpieces" book. The first few stories were cool, especially the first one called "Call me Joe" by Poul Anderson.
