  • A Rather Lovely Inheritance
    • Rated 5 stars

    From my review at AAR:

"A Rather Lovely Inheritance provided me with a delightful read, tapping into my love of European travel and girl sleuths, as well as my fondness for unusual chick lit.

Penny Nichols is on a film set in Cannes; she provides historical research to the producers of historical sagas and her current project is a movie about Josephine. Her stay is interrupted when she receives word from her parents that she must travel to London to represent her family, who live in the U.S., at the reading of her Great Aunt Penelope's will. Upon her arrival she meets up with Jeremy, a lawyer and distant relative she hasn't seen since she was nine and the two spent a summer together playing secret agents.

According to her aunt's will, Jeremy has been left a villa in France, while Penny gets the garage and all its contents. Penny's mother inherits a gorgeous London townhouse, which she instantly turns over to Penny, thus making her a wealthy heiress.

As they work through the inheritance, Jeremy gets information that changes everything he believes about himself. While he goes into a temporary – and completely believable – snit, we don't get any long term angst since Jeremy is not a man to hold onto his problems endlessly, nor is Penny a woman to put up with an angsty man.

Penny has a slew of mysteries to uncover. She learns that all of aunt's jewelry is missing and one night wakes up to discover a mysterious man searching through her aunt's belongings. Then there are the nasty relatives clearly looking for something. Penny leaps into unraveling these and other mysteries quite naturally. As a child, she was teased not only about her silly name, but also because her parents wrote a series of picture books featuring Penny Nichols, Girl Detective.

As is the case with chick lit, this is Penny's story, told from her perspective. I found her to be a delightful heroine. She has exuberance for life, taking joy in simple things such as racing up the stairs, rushing to beat Jeremy some place. I enjoyed how she gets lost in the history of her aunt, spending hours looking through old photographs and clothes. Her love of history, and historical artifacts at times lent the book the feeling of a 1940s romp.

The author provides wonderful descriptions of Cannes, London, and other European settings. They made me feel as if I was right there with Penny, through all her adventures.

This isn't a book that will suit all romance readers. There's no sex involved, and only a very gradual, sweet romance. And if you long for a meaty, complex read, this definitely isn't the book for you. However, if you think that all chick lit involves heroines who live for shopping - and you enjoy a light, sweet romance - you will be pleasantly surprised by A Rather Lovely Inheritance. I found it to be completely lovely."

I read this book because I wanted to get a PBS credit, and the wish list for it was dwindling. I bought the book from all they hype almost 6 months ago, the winner of an online contest got a book deal and I wanted to check it out. I’ve tried to start this book 3 times. Once I started reading the book, I was immediately transported to English influenced India. The description of India was impressive, the political struggle of this time, was one that I felt deep down, I knew what side I was on, but was torn as the h/h were. Though this book has a lot of war in it, I felt like I was reading this wonderful adventure about survival. First, from an awful betrothal, to a whirlwind love, to life, to dealing with demons of the past. While I feel that the hero does not act himself for a little while, it's not enough to bump the review to a 4. I can recommend this book highly! I emailed Ms. Duran and she has 2 books coming out next summer. You can bet, I will be there buying them.

WARNING: Do not start this book unless you have sometime, because it’s a book you could sit down and read in one sitting it’s so good. This book captured my attention from Chapter 1- It’s HARD for a book to do that, but Linda Howard does accomplishes this in her latest book, Death Angel. I couldn’t get through the pages quick enough. It’s definitely a different story, and one that’s a great read. She’s given so much detail about Drea, that you feel really connected to her, which, sometimes you never get this close to the heroine. Beware—in this book, the H/H do not spend a huge amount of time together, and for some that’s a problem, but I enjoyed the story so much, I didn’t see it as a problem!

took a break from my historical romance novels and read this. Boy am I glad I did. It was a page turner, reading it in 2 days. I loved how Jaine and Sam said and did what they felt, too many H/H don't act on their true feelings- they just meshed together after the initial idea of trying to exist as neighbors. The chemistry between them was great and the book made me laugh over and over again. I truly enjoyed this book and you will too!”

I LOVE Linda Howard books. I haven’t read a book by her that I haven’t liked, and boy can she write an alpha male. Her stories are rich, full of emotion and she really connects to the reader. This story in particular was so well written, you feel the struggles of both Dane and Marlie and when the end of the book comes, LH rewards the readers with a great HEA. I am really looking forward to reading her MacKenzie family.”

This book is a bit different, I loved it. A story line of a man who loses his site and his love. Without giving away a HUGE twist in the story, which rocked.... I will say that it that is an extreemely romantic story, that you do not want to miss!!!!

Sugar Daddy is a favorite of mine, it was going to be very hard for the sequel to measure up. Although this is not a favorite, I still loved the book. It is about the redemption of Hardy and Haven is his redemption. I loved them together, I loved the book. I do feel the ending didn't flow as good as it could have. Mrs. Kleypas, Jack needs a story now!”
