“(Spoiler Alert!!)
In this novel, the lead male , Justin, considers rape an appropriate punishment for infidelity. The leading female, Arabella (innocent of said infidelity anyway), seems to agree with him. When this issue is finally worked out, Arabella says she would have made Justin's wedding night miserable too if she thought he cheated on her. How romantic! Rape is not okay. Ever. How can I enjoy a romance novel where the lead is a rapist? I stuck with novel thinking when he found out she was innocent at least he would feel horrible and leave her alone and set up for life, while he goes off and dies in the war against Napoleon. Its the only "happy" ending that could have happened. But of course, they stay together and there's a lackluster sex scene in the end. The plot about Arabella's father being a murderer and the comte's intentions was intriguing. It was the twisted relationship of the main characters that ruined it completely.”
