I found Catching the Fire didn't add anything new, almost a place holder so
they could call it a trilogy.

You're the only other person I've seen around that rated American Gods 3 stars.
I also loved Shutter Island. Now I'm going to stalk you, LOL.
Just kidding, don't call the cops or anything!

    Hey Wayne,

Although I was intially excited by the aspect of a monthly group read/discussion, I pretty quickly lost interest. All the posts seem very generic ... what few there were, and if I am tempted to swim a bit into deeper water, I am terrified that I'm going to accidently give something away and spoil it for another reader ...

And then ... I read a couple of titles that while they were entertaining, I had other things to read in my stack that I probably would have enjoyed more, but chose the group selection just so I could discuss them, and then the whole thing fizzled out. Kinda-sorta felt like I was squandering my reading time, which is precious to me ...

Phil did something neat once though ... he wanted to comment about something in ... I believe it was "Four and Twenty Blackbirds" (maybe the last group read I tackled) ... posted *Spoiler Alert*, and then tabbed down several times so that I absolutely could not accidently see what he'd written without purposefully scrolling down.

"Children" is one of my favorite King shorts ... I think the older, flawed characters are infinitely more interesting than the attractive, young things of the film. I have stepped away from horror for the moment, and am completely lost in 1950's Missouri ... "Fiddler's Ghost". I know, might sound like it was a small step *L* ... but from the beginning, I was expecting a kinder-gentler ghost story. The ghost angle may have hooked me, but I stay for the dialogue and the fabulous characters ... and the elegant language which permeated that area mid-century ... almost Edwardian English, but at the same time, most definitely not. Also, the locals have a habit of exchanging nouns for verbs, and vice-versa at the speed of light, which seems unthinkable, yet feels so right at the same time. At this point, this alone is enough to keep me going for weeks. I'm savoring every page ... I knock off a chapter ... and savor. The ghost's character, in particular, who has been kicking about since the Civil War, has some very interesting ideas on ... well, just about everything.

I have Robert Duvall in mind for the film version ... *L*

I think I was just in the mood for "Fair Extension", because I read it with a huge smile on my face ... the entire story had such an inside joke feeling to it for me ... (Maybe it was a release after so much tension after the first two stories .... I read it directly following the dreaded "Big Driver" and believe me, I wasn't looking forward to working my way through that one ... I was of half a mind to skip it altogether). I was waiting the entire time for the other shoe to fall ... some sort of karmic payback for Streeter. He wasn't an outstanding example of a human being to begin with, so why him?

Why was he allowed to live ... and live well, at the expense of so many others? And I had to ask myself, was he unhappy because the whole thing came so easily to him, or was he just one of those people who seems unable to be satisfied?

On the other hand, a truly good person would have refused the offer outright. Maybe evil recognizes its own ...

Why ask why? That's life, Joe ...

I'm not saying I didn't feel guiltier than hell afterwards for laughing! *L* Because I did ...

I do like to think that true evil is ever-present and fluid and able to adapt to its environment. If it were a living organism, it would have to possess these qualities ... why not Pennywise in the midwest? What if evil never truly sleeps, but just moves to a different neighborhood?

As I was flipping through FULL last night, I found another thinly veiled reference ... In "1922", James tells the sheriff that his boy might have gone looking for his mother ... she could have easily written him, and the letter intercepted at the Hemingford Home Grocery, which also serves as the town post office. His son was in the habit of stopping off after school for a bag of candy or peanuts ... Mother Abigail ... I believe that is the character's name (although I haven't reread THE STAND in years) lived in Hemingford Home. I also caught "Children of the Corn" this weekend with a friend ... I recalled "Gatlin, 7 miles" on the marker, but had completely forgotten that the town that Vicki and Fred were attempting to get to, 19 miles away, was ... Hemingford.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong ... I haven't reread any of King in a long time, and details get crowded out ... but it all sounds very familar.

I do enjoy King's supernatural tales moreso than the real world psychotic (good description) ... I'm hoping for something truly terrifying ... and epic ... huge, rambling thing that makes me want to take the phone off the hook for the entire weekend ... and scares me silly.

Hi Wayne ... I'd venture the story in FULL DARK you're referring to would have to be "Big Driver" ... that one made me feel in need of a mental scrub myself ... and I skipped several passages (and I am not a passage skipper! *L*). I would let my eye run ahead several lines ... only to stop and think, "Nope, keep skimming ... " (I don't tolerate violation themes very well, but did better with that one that I had originally thought I would ... perhaps because I could see the Mac barreling down the highway toward me ... perhaps because I skimmed).

Overall, I loved the collection ... and good for you, making such progress on your Christmas gifts. I'll be another month getting through mine ...

I believe you that you wouldn't drop asleep for Dome :-) That would be unforgivable ;-)
Yup, you're right UR is on CD I stumbled on that yesterday.. I'll certainly try to get that one read one way or another. I didn't have a clue what it was about until I read your post the other day and read a summary of it as i wondered what you meant about it being special to read on a Kindle, but now i understand..sounds great. I like stories like that..

Ha.."hands got fatigued" indeed, more like you were dropping off to sleep old fella ;-)
Yeah I read it...in hard back..arrgh. I lugged it around in my bag for a few weeks on the train..mind you, it did wonders for my fitness :-)
Yeah.. you've never heard of iReader, which probably explains my poor choice..hehe. I think it's tied to one of the UK book chains (Waterstones). Actually I'm afraid the purchase was down to plain impatience. I had my eye on the Sony PRS350 but when I phoned up all the stores, not a one had it! Grr... so I spotted the iRiver in the same shop, same price..but a 6" screen n it sounded ok so I thought give it a whirl.
Aparently the ePub is the main standard, though I'm no expert. I was worried a kindle might tie me up or something, and I had quite a few ePubs already on the ipod.
Shame I can't get UR though..Kindle exclusive sigh. And DT related!
I so wanted the Kindle, and it was cheaper too..but needed the ePub thing.
Well enjoy your Kindle :-) No excuse not to read loads more now :P

Darn..September!?! I got it into my head that it was going to be mid 2011... ah well, what u don't know can't hurt u i suppose. That'll be on my shopping list as soon as possible :-)

And, about 4 days ago I joined you in the electronic book reading experience..only I went for a different reader, not the Kindle. I wanted a Kindle but i got the impression it lacked the epub format which I wanted so I reluctantly bought an iRiver ....which i since found is probably one of the poorest viewers (impulse buy, I never learn)..but I'm really happy with it - the only annoying thing with it is that it only shows the first say 15 characters of your books titles..so if you got a series, then it's hard to tell them apart and find what you want to read. But the reading experience is fine which is the main thing. :-) I quite like it actually :-) Ha, yes..i never thought about the Big Book Problem. I like that you can have more than 1 with you - I'm off on vacation soon so I didn't know what to take (don't want to be stuck with a stinker) but now I needn't worry.
Man, your copy of Under the Dome sounds like it was possessed!
