Hello dear member of the Black Feminist/Womanist Literature group! It's J., the admin., and I'm writing to inform you of the group's new look! (And it goes beyond the change in our group picture, though it is nice, don't you agree?) :) What we're discussing now: Patricia Hill Collins' Black Feminist Thought, Toni Morrison's Sula for our July read, our little BIG Read: 7 short stories in 7 days to begin later this month, the National Black Arts Festival where Alice Walker and Pearl Cleage are featured speakers, and more!

We'll soon have a group blog up and running, will begin profiling the uberly dynamic authors within our own group, discussing women's/girls action coalitions in your city, reviving some of our good ol' threads, etc.

I challenge everyone to invite at least one friend (already a member of shelfari or otherwise) to join the Black Feminist/Womanist group and to log in at least bi-weekly. (Though weekly would be wonderful!) And I pledge to do the same.

And did you know that Toni Morrison's new novel, A Mercy, is due to be released in November? Ah, you would if you'd visited our group page! (No, actually, I haven't posted this information. lol) But do stop by and fall into the purple haze that is extraordinary literature by feminists of color!

    Love, Jaya

Hey Vizion what's good girl? I did enjoy " Killing Johnny Fry ". Personally, I thought it was funny, a little raunchy, but funny. I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Mosley and he's a cool brotha. I really enjoy the Easy Rawlings mysteries though. Good to hear from you and don't be a stranger. By the way, don't trip off of Utah's luck, the Lakers are still going to win that series and the NBA Championship. Ya heard it hear first! Peace.

    Peace Vizion,
I hope that you continue to work on your book of poetry! I have not submitted my book to butterfly yet. I plan on submitting it in April or May, so that it can be published by summer 2008. I gave myself a deadline of 2008 to publishthe first book. Thanks for the list of bookstores in LA. Hopefully I will be able to connect with some of them as a new author for a book signing. I am really enjoying "Joys Of Motherhood," I think that it was a wonderful choice for the bookclub read. I hope that you have a wonderful day. Happy MLK DAY!

    Blessings & Light!

    Hey Vizion,
I am just passing through to see if you have written any poetry lately? I've been reading Nikki Giovanni's Acolytes and I find her work very inspiring for young poets! I will see you for the discussion of "Joys of Motherhood." I am still waiting on my book to arrive!

    Peace & Blessings

I can understand your point about Datcher. His book does speak to a myriad of experiences, but I think Nathan McCall's book is written better. That's not to say that Mr. Datcher is anything less than a capable writer, but he writes more like a poet (which he, of course, is) than a narrator. McCall seems, to me, to be more deliberately trying to convey his messages and connect with his intended audience, while Datcher is just telling the story as if he were having a conversation with a friend. Neither one is bad, I'm just more drawn to Nathan McCall's work, but it's not like I've ever been a young black man in America to truly identify with either one. :) As for A Glimpse of My Soul, I still have a few copies left in my basement and I could send you one if you'd like. Other than that, I'm focusing all my energy on Prelude to Praise to get it published by the summer.

    Peace Sis,

    How are you doing?
I am inspired to have my book published and to have a book signing in LA. You will have to give me a list of independent bookstores in California. Also, I ordered "The Joys of Motherhood" today from Amazon for $6.00.I am excited about discussing a wonderful piece of literature with you for the new year! I recently joined the African reading Group and African book challenge so this boook will be a perfect fit for the 50 book challenge and the African book challenge. We have to rap about poetry and our passion for the craft sometime in the future!

    Keep writing & Reading!

Thanks for the reminder. I have made a note on my book calendar. I know have a calender that lists all of the books I need to read for the various discussions. It helps me to stay focus on which book I should be reading when. LOL

    Hi Vizion,

Thanks for the comment, sis. I wish I could write enough poetry to publish a book of poems. LOL. Poetry comes to me sporadic to consider myself a real poet. LOL. I'm definitely a fiction and nonfiction writer who writes an occasional poem. :-)

    much love and peace,

    Gwyn

I just finished reading your review of Rasing Fences and realized that we share a common love for the work, but I have a question. What didn't you like about Nathan McCall's book, which happens to be one of my personal favorites?
