I'm a proud father of 2 daughters, eagle scout, lover of books, nature, gaming, and trivia. I'm a little (lot) on the slow side of reading since I have kids, but would love the opportunity to chat with you about the books I've read and any you have to recommend!

The Mistress of the Art of Death is a novel by Arianna Franklin that I enjoyed a great deal. It is a midieval forensics type of setting. It is the first in a four book series (by the same title). I have yet to read the rest of the series so I am not sure how it turns put, but I think irbid worth a shot. I have been looking at The First Law books by Abercrombie for a while. I noticed you have read his work. Would you recommend them?

David, "Tales of the Dying Earth" by Jack Vance is perhaps the quintessential collection of sci/fi fantasy/adventure stories ever written by one of the most revered and awarded authors to write in this genre. The words that come to mind when trying to describe his incredible achievement are: Wondrous, magnificent, epic, spellbinding, dazzling, exquisite, wordsmithery, magical, elegant, enthralling, engrossing, imaginative, original, mellifluous pacing, atmospheric backdrops, transformational, fantastical storylines! I read the first story in this collection when i was 11 years old and the others in the ensuing years. Over the years I have read the collection over 20 times, each time marvelling at its life changing impact on my reading addiction. Just imagine being able to transform written words from your minds eye into sensual life-like visions and you will then understand the mystical and sensual impact of Jack Vance's brilliance! Ironically, because of its unique qualities I have always been protective and therefore reluctant to expose this truly fabulous experience to others for fear of diminishing its value to me...a misguided supposition I know, but true never-the-less. So, if you want to share my journey into the unknown and wander through the beautiful words penned by a master scribe then you will read this incredible collection of stories and revel in their beatific perfection. Storytelling at its best; a masterpiece...

David, a friend told me that "The Riyria Revelation Series" by Michael Sullivan is one of the best fantasy/adventure stories ever written. I haven't read them yet but intend to soon and knowing you love this genre I want to pass it on for your edification. Happy Holidays to you and yours! READ ON...

David, thanks for your recommendations for books to read, I'll add them to my wish list. I've accumulated so many books over the last couple of years that I've several years of reading ahead of me if i don't buy any new titles which I know I will do. So many books, so little time. READ ON...

David, I'd be happy to discuss the books I've read with you but must warn you that many of the books on my shelf were read when I was a young man so my recall might be spotty. But please ask away. READ ON...

Well I'm about a fourth through Hobb, and only through the first chapter in Herbert, but both are adding up to the hype! Dreamsongs is entertaining, but not quite gripping. I usually read a tale or two in between books.

As far as the future of ASOIAF I'm wondering how Martin can realistically continue such an ongoing war. The fight in Westeros has been so epic that you would have to think there's nobody left, and the people have to be getting fed up with the higher-borns sending them to death (maybe a certain religious group that just gained permission to have an army ;) ). You can also see how Martin is rapidly moving west to bring Daeneries into the big picture (the iron islands, Dorne, Tyrion, Arya, Sam). He's probably moving over there because there is a lot more people left alive that need to die in an epic battle. In the end I'm thinking everyone mingles off east by the end of ADWD, and Danny heads to Westeros by the end of book 6. So I'm hoping the series concludes with Lord Snow (last of my beloved Starks) fighting off the others, and he might have some dragons on his his side ;). LETS JUST HOPE JON DIES A GLORIOUS DEATH!!! I MEAN THE WAY NED AND ROBB DIED MADE ME WANT TO BURN THE BOOKS. (I didn't however because they were just too good.)

Same to you, a week late! My kids haven't let me get near the computer for ages (they seem to think that they need it far more than I do). I guess I'll have to invest in a laptop. Got a Blackberry for Christmas but I find it difficult to navigate on and sloooowwww. Back to my afternoon meetings! Kiss the kids (and the wife), cherish them for all you're worth, they are your true wealth.
