My heart's desire since childhood was to become a librarian and I succeeded after brief diversions into geology and physical anthropology, as well as a few years where I thought being an oceanographer would have been cool. Since getting my face wet and bobbing around like a cork on the high seas wasn't appealing in reality - I found my niche... more »

wow, I was just introduced to this site. This site should be either linked to your kindle when you buy it, or in the instructions or tips or help pages of Amazon. This is an invaluable tool, and I appreciate your work as well as the others bustin' their humps in here so we don't have a bunch of "postal" kindle owners because they can't browse anything in an order... I've been hunting for a solution to a loaded kindle that at least has collections and an archive of a ton of books but no 'identifiers'. I needed to open room on my kindle so i could collect more free books but because I was using the internet explorer, when i 1clicked to buy, the drop down menu didn't offer the cloud. I found out today that chrome, safari, and mozilla/firefox do. So that fixes the urgency to index... but leaves me with a new way to having organization, but over 3000 books to plow through from the past and 50+ to organize daily! So if I'm frazzled over just 3 months of kindle use, I can only THANK the librarians and really great members who get out there, and get us through it!!!

    Indeed a very nice library.

I was happy to find that a listing of a book that I posted was cleaned up marvelously, and set straight, by The Librarian. Thank you!

Very interested to see what you think of Behind the Beautiful Forevers. I read it in ARC form a few months ago . . .I don't want to bias you one way or another so I'll wait to see what you think!

I saw your recent review for Mawson's Will, and started to recommend Touching the Void, but see that you've already read it! I was surprised however, to see Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air absent from your shelf... you've got to add it to your to-be-read list - it's unbelievably good! (As are most of his books...) I hope you're doing well, Alfred

I see you are reading "Blue Lattitudes"which is about the Voyages of Captain Cook. I really like that book. I think it helped that I had visited Australia in 1988. I think it compares somewhat with Paul Theroux's "Happy Islands of Oceania" which I had read some time ago.

I know you sent me the list, like, 3 months ago, but I never got around to thanking you. That's an awesome list of dog books. Of that list, I've only ever read "Where the Fern Grows" (which I don't think I could ever again because it made me cry so hard). So I look forward to trying these out! Thanks so much!

I'm currently reading "The Other End of the Leash" about dog and human behavior - I'm learning so much!

I noticed that you're reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I just ran the statistics for our library and was surprised to find that this was by far our highest circulation general nonfiction book over the past year.

Through some diabolical glitch at Shelfari I ended up with TWO accounts and could only sign in to the newly created one. So I've had to transfer all of my books and, more or less, start from scratch. In the process I've also lost all of my "friends" and "followers". I've tried to get Shelfari to correct the situation to no avail. They keep referring me to Amazon and the Amazon "help" people claim never to have heard of Shelfari. Hope you'll continue to "follow" me at my new location. Gunter

My condolences to both your coffee and computer screen. What's interesting is that one of my junior officers really is a Huron Indian and I asked him this morning about it. He swears they're off the stuff.

    It's me again...

Re the Oxford Dictionary of American Usage... I did select the targe as the title you prefer. However, I rejected several editions because they had different authors. They don't look like the same content.

If I messed up, let me know.

Yo - there has been a combination request on the queue from you for the Bullfinch stuff for a couple of months. I'm rejecting the last edition because it is (apparently) an ominbus of both Fable and Charlemagne. If I screwed up, resubmit.

    OK?

    Thanks,
