Hello! I noticed that you are a Shelfari member who lives in the DC area. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, a lot of the groups for DC residents don't appear to be very active, which is a shame because I'd like very much to connect with other DC-area book lovers.

What I'd like to do is start a new DC group on Shelfari. It doesn't have to be a traditional "book group" where we choose a book and then read it. I'd like it to be more like a bulletin board that focuses on the rich DC book culture, where we can post upcoming events or talk about a book that's making waves around town or recommend different DC bookstores.

However, before I start such a group, I'm trying to make sure that there is enough interest, and the group doesn't become just another inactive group on the pile. So I'm contacting members of these other groups and anyone who mentions that they live in the DC area to see if they'd be interested in taking part. You don't have to promise that you'll post every day; but I would ask that if you know something going on that others in the group would like to know about, you mention it in the group.

Please contact me by Wednesday either way--if you are interested or not interested. If I get enough people who mention that they are interested, I will contact you about the group starting up so that you can join it.

Thanks so much! Hope to hear from you soon!

Have you read Dave Lakhani’s book “Persuasion, the art of getting what you want?” You might want to add it to your list.

    Heya, Bethanne --
I LOVE that you've got Confederacy of Dunces on the list.

Had this on my shelf for ages and ages and lugged it along with me on vacation last year - I sat under an umbrella roaring with laughter and reading passages to my husband. Ignatius J. Reilly is pathological. Diabolical. Selfish, egotistical, repulsive, maddening, maybe even psychotic -- yet hilarious, laugh-out-loud funny and his flaws are in all of us.

    Bravo!

    Hi Bethanne:
You have one of my all-time favorite books on your shelf: The Unbearable Lightness of Being. I don't often read books twice, let alone three or more times. Too many books, too little time. But I confess I sometimes go back and read my favorite passages from this book just to remember how much meaning and beautiful a talented writer can pack into one sentence. His writing in this book is intoxicating. I also loved Middlemarch and Confederacy of Dunces but haven't read most of the rest on your shelf. I'm not sure how to be a part of picking your next book, but I do wonder if you've read and written about either of the Khaled Hosseini books, The Kite Runner and A Thousand Spendid Suns. I loved them both, though I don't know if I'm up for the ordeal of reading another by him. Maybe by the time he gets another out, I'll be over the tragedies of the first two.

Hi BookMaven, Hope I'm smart enough to fill out all the blanks correctly. After spending years researching WWI, I am again starting to read a few novels. Michner has written a number of "thin" books that I love, Caravan is one, which takes place in Afganstan. Written in 1970s. Amazing what he described. Nelle

I also loved "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan." Was very disappointed in the followup ("Peony in Love"). Actually got to write about it for the Boston Phoenix, but in brief, I felt her character wasn't real. I think See was trying very hard to use the voice of that era, but the conventions (being a ghost - and also being pro-footbinding) just sunk it for me. Ah well. She was trying something new, so power to her.
