“If you enjoy reading books about family relationships and dynamics, this is one not to be missed. Khaled Hosseini transports the reader to Afghanistan, to the roots of a brother and sister who are torn apart by circumstances beyond one another's control. The book explores what happens over the years, weaving in several other story lines of family dynamics until the pieces come together at the end. This is a book that will evoke emotional ties in the reader and remind us all how we all may be of different cultures, origins, etc. But there is a universal spirit, and that which binds us to one another is that we all come from a family, and we have all experienced suffering throughout our lifetimes. While I think A Thousand Splendid Suns is still my favorite of Mr. Hosseini's books, I really did enjoy this one and I think this novel has lasting impact for anyone who reads it. As always, the writing is lush and descriptive and evocative of the various essences of people and places contained within. It really is an encompassing read, one that spans many tableaux and depicts the rippling impact of all the lives that are affected by the threads of fate and the smallest of decisions.”
