Well, I'm a senior in HS. I plan to go to art college and get a degree in illustration, then hopfully work in the movie industry. I've always liked reading, but lost speed in 8th-10th grade because of the busy work load. At the end of 10th grade I decided I really wanted to get back into reading, and set a challenge for myself. I've kept track... more »

    Hi Shannon,
Sorry ot has taken me so long to reply - I have only made brief visits to add books so missed you!
I am a HUGE Geroge R R Martin fan, so terribly biased, but he writes an incredible epic! If you love well developed characters - good detail - politics, murder, mystery, love & lust..... A Game of Thrones is for you.! I recently introduced the series to three others and they are hooked....
And yes, thoroughly enjoyed Divine Misfortune, will be reading a nameless witch soon.

I would recommend engine of the gods a lot but it is extremely dark. all other scalzi writing is very Heinleinsque with that rah-rah everyman quality Engine is not like that at all but that all is doom and gloom.

I really enjoyed The Windup Girl. I'd say it's one of the best books I've read this year. Sandman Slim is one of my favorite books. I've read it twice. It's sequel, Kill the Dead, isn't quite as good, but I'm still really excited for the third book in the series. As for The Dream of Perpetual Motion, that wasn't really my cup of tea. I rated it 2 stars and even though I only read it 4 months ago, there's not much I remember about it. It didn't make a huge impression on me.

    Hello to you too :)
I just bought a used copy of the first Bartimaeus book today for half a dollar, and I look forward to reading it.

I'm almost finished with "The Windup Girl", and I'd say that thus far it was a very good read. I'm kind of leaning toward a four star rating right now, but we'll see how it ends before final judgment is passed.

Actually the first book in the series is an OK fantasy reading but the second book is very boring

Yes, shannon, you should definitely read the lightning theif. I am currently reading it aloud to my younger siblings, and there have been moments where I've been forced to stop reading because we're all laughing too hard. Just look at the chapter titles: "I accidentally vaporize my math teacher" "My mother teaches me bullfighting"...what more could you ask for? Its an awesome start to an awesome series.

Hey Shannon, I read your review for the Arctic Incident, and I must say that I agree that the story should revolve more around the Fowl family business. I don't think that the characters were cliched, but the Eternity Code was much better than the Arctic Incident.

On another note, it doesn't look like you liked the giver that much, but I guess you have alot higher standards for book ratings than I do. I really need to go back through and re-rate all my books.

Actually, Alyss comes out of her world and meets Carroll, but this is BEFORE he wrote the book, and she inspires him to write the book, so it's kind of the opposite. But definitely better than Inkheart. At least the second two. The first Inkheart was pretty good...

It was an interesting idea. I'd say it was a three star book but I haven't read the rest of the series. (The library is sometimes annoying and won't get all the books in.)
