I'm currently in the process of going through all my book club's lists since 2001, when I joined the group, and adding those books I read that weren't already on my Shelfari shelves.
On my shelf are books that my husband and I own and books that I have read and (if I do not own them) have some reason for adding--even if it's only that many of you have read it and I want to chime in or let you know I haven't missed it.
"Art is long, life is short." I am slowly learning to accept that I will not read all the brilliant writing and, more importantly, that I am not obliged to finish every book I start--this is a difficult one for me.
I also love books as objects. I am a member of the Folio Society, and I add to my collection through Ebay, which is more affordable!
A thoughtfully amusing article, "Wonder Bread": http://www.theamericanscholar.org/au07/wonder-bukiet.html
My ratings are evolving as follows:
No stars: I haven't read it, I don't remember how much I enjoyed it, or I'm not sure how to rate it (eg, a variable anthology).
5 stars: A lifetime favorite--I can probably read this one again and again.
4 stars: I enjoyed it and probably reread it or will reread it. Warm or stirring memories.
3 stars: Worth reading, or I can't remember if it was better. This will be my bucket rating.
2 stars: Perhaps worth reading. Did not captivate me.
1 star: A waste of time and paper, or worse.
