I live in the Appalachian mountains, but have lived in a large city and many smaller Midwest towns. Thought I was a city girl but discovered I love small-town charm. I am an avid, professional quilter, counted cross stitcher, reader, writer, semi-retired ordained minister (Rev. Dr.), semi-retired grief therapist, and bird lover. I have two... more »

Elegance of a Hedgehog was a delightful story about people who hide their personal gifts because they mistakenly believe that revealing their secrets will somehow diminish the very gift. It is truly a jewel.

Elegance of a hedgehog is a quiete book, taking you away from your daily happenings and let time stand still for the time you read. This book came to me gently like a cat with velvet paws, right inthe middle of my heart.

Another book, if your are ready to take full responsibilty is Choice Theory by Dr. William Glasser.
You can read and "do" this book before: Dr. David Burns 'the feeling good Handbook', not just a book to read, if one does the activities and exercises and one will change.

What did you think about Memory of Running? I read it about a year ago. Although the book had an unlikely protagonist and quirky book, I liked the story.

Kathryn! Of course. I do know you. This is a delight. Now I need a beagle photo. Mine's a blue tick, rescued just in front of the jaws of a bush hog by my oldest son. We don't know how he got there (6 weeks old at most) but we're awfully glad he survived and went on to become our companion. So Nemo says hi to Spencer. And thank you for recommending the Ministry is Murder series. I absolutely adore writing about Aggie and family. Glad to know you're here.

I know you can search your shelves by a certain tag, but is there a way to search by multiple tags?

Glad to see you here, Kathryn! Shelfari is a great tool for keeping up with my personal library, although I haven't had time to enter my books yet. Most are Christian non-fiction. This will hopefully prevent me from buying a book that I already have.

Most of my "want to read" books are Christian fiction, but I'll put some mysteries on there soon. I get a fiction catalogue 2-3 times a year from Christian Book Distributors, mark what I'm interested in reading, and can now list them here so I won't forget. Obviously, there are too many books to read in this lifetime, but it's fun to "shelve" them.

I'm off to run errands. Until later on Skype . . .

Hi - noticed you had quite a few books by Elizabeth Berg listed - are her books similar to Jodi Picoult's? (I noticed you had quite a few of hers, too.) I think I might pick up one or two of Berg's - I was thinking either "What We Keep" or "The Art of Mending" - which ones would you suggest?

Because the group shelf here on Shelfari doesn't allow reviews or comments we have set up a 'dummy shelf'. If you go to the group and look under administrators you will see one person called Play Book Tag Shelf (just roll over the admins pictures with your mouse) If you clink that administrator you will get to the member page and a link to See Play Book Tags Shelf Shelf.

Clicking the link will take you to our shelf- currently about 1025 books. We have a person (Kristal) who is our shelving administrator and she adds all the books that people review to the shelf. They are tagged with the person (or persons) that read the book. The shelf is updated every two or three days, so eventually your review will be there, with your name as a tag. If you click your name you will see the books you have read for this group.

This allows us to maintain a shelf of books read soporifically for PBT. Any books added to the Play Book Tag shelf are removed, only our administrators an post books to our group shelf.

QT K! Are you there? I hope things are well and you're keeping up with all of your online orders. I read Sickend, and I was, well, sickened myself. Such a disturbing disorder for a mother to have. It's that abuse cycle that "seems" like it's hereditary. But the author herself becomes the one to break the chain, which is always amazing to me in these stories. I hope she was able to help those new little children in her mom's care in the end. I'm glad I read this...makes my own relationship with my Mom not seem so bad. Any other good reads of your own? I'm listening to a good one...Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Isa-something. The Narrator is fantastic. Hope to hear from you soon. OJ

Hey QT K! How goes it these days? It finally stopped snowing here and the sun has actually been showing it's rays so I'm not as glum as I was for a while. How's your health? I've been good except that I've been eating anything candy coated or dipped in chocolate that I can get my hands on, and it's beginning to show. So I've been re-reading my diet books in between my book club reads and my addiction to the Gilmore Girls DVDs I keep picking up at the library. I was thinking about you and wanted to touch base since it's been a while. Oh, by the way, HAPPY MOTHERS DAY! Optic Junkie

Haven't seen you lurking around Shelfari much lately. Hope all is well. So I posted some questions about The Saffron Kitchen on the Late Night Bookies group. If you get a chance, I would love some of your input. I'm going to take the responses with me to bookclub this weekend to get some discussions going.
I really liked it and hope others did too!

The Saffron Kitchen: Finished it! Loved it! Thanks, oh so very much, for introducing me to it! I just may go on a middle eastern kick myself. Here the review I posted:
What an interesting story this is. I get really bored reading books with one dimensional characters, and I was NOT disappointed with this one. I felt the characters to be complex, but not out of reach for me. I found out more about each of them as the story progressed, and by the end of the book I felt I understood them. Some readers may complain about the way it was written in it's juxtaposing from 1st to 3rd person, but I found that to be an accurate way of telling this story. It felt like I read a much longer book than it was. So much told without burying me in descriptions. I also loved the way that Iran was portrayed through the eyes of the different characters. Before reading this book, I would never have wanted to go there...but now I've had a change of heart.

I hope all is well with you and your family. Later Q.T. K! oj
