I'm an English major who graduated from Iowa State University, receiving my Bachelor's degree in 2009.
I apparently taught myself how to read when I was around 2 years of age. I've been reading ever since then; during meals, between classes, during any breaks in the day, in bed before falling asleep, in bed after waking up in the morning, etc.
I eventually want to become a published novelist, hence the English major with an emphasis on Creative Writing. I have several pieces I'm working on, though I'm constantly going back and picking them apart, which I hope only makes them better.
I'm a very critical reader, probably from all the analyzing I learned to do during my college years. I'm open to reading almost anything, but it is hard to read a text now without picking it apart. My pet peeve is probably cliche words/phrases/sentences. A good writer to me, these days, is a unique writer that uses new phrases and descriptors, one that can make me raise my eyebrows instead of roll my eyes.
One of my very favorite authors is Stephen King, though science fiction is not my favorite genre. However, I enjoy almost every piece of text I've read by Stephen King, and plan on eventually reading all his pieces of work, from oldest to newest. I'm still going at it; it'll take a while.
As for genres, I enjoy classics (Jane Eyre, Ethan From, Little Women), romances that aren't cliche, some science fiction, and memoirs. Like I said, I'm open to reading almost anything. Many of the texts that were thrown at me in literature courses are now some of my favorite pieces (The House on Mango Street, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, O Pioneers). So if anyone has a recommendation for me, I'll more than likely check it out! It's the best way I have of finding new, unique, intriguing novels.
On another note, the other loves of my lives are animals and music. I've been playing piano since the age of 2, and I also play violin, guitar, percussion, drumset, flute, ukulele, and I sing. I write music and songs, as well. I'm in the process of becoming a certified veterinary technician, so I can practice my other passion in life. Needless to say, my three hobbies (reading, music, animals) keep my very busy! There is never a dull day in my house.
