When I was a little girl I desperately wanted to learn how to read because my older siblings seemed to enjoy it so much. I was very motivated except the summer between kindergarten and first grade when my mother made me go through a set of phonics books that had one book for each letter of the alphabet. It was torture when all the other kids were playing outside & I had to stay inside to work on my reading before I could go out to join them. My mother worked with me because I didn't learn to read that year in kindergarten (they had ditched phonics for some new method) and she wanted to make sure that I wasn’t behind when I entered first grade. Because of my mother’s help I was in the top reading group for my class in first grade. Thanks Mom! Ever since then I’ve always loved books and reading. I’m not sure what I think about the electronic book format. Holding an actual book is part of the experience that I like. It’s nice to escape, ignoring all technology and get lost in good book on a rainy day (or a sunny day for that matter).
