Hi "Orangette" Haven't really figured out how to navigate the site as I'm your garden variety dinosaur - Thanks for inviting me to participate - I'm a fringe reader - Recently read two novels by a Sicillian anti-Mafia prosecutor- last name "Carofiglio" they are literate mysteries - main character a kind of Italian Colombo - interesting for details on Italian law/court system. Am now enveloped in the atmosphere of post-raj southern India via English 20th c. writer, Rumer Godden: "Coromandel" in the title - tongue in cheek display of the "antics" of politics, lovely place descriptions - Also recently read life of a true saint, teacher to several American teachers of Vipassana style Buddhism. Her name and the title of the book: Dipa Ma. Superb. Florette

and she said it on William Buckley's TV show, which I was watching ata the time. It was the beginning of the end for Lillian Hellman. Apparently, once the dam broke, everyone else remembered she was a liar too. By the end, only Jane Fonda thoight she (Lillian) was a hereoine. But don't be discouraged. Mary McCarthy was a classic old fashioned liberal and a great writer.

Sam--Thanks for the invite; I just signed up. I'll think up some stuff to add later, though, as you know, I've mostly been delightfully mired in the 19th c. novel, as well as obscure poetry that nobody reads.
