"Death is certain, replacing both the siren-song of Paradise & the dread of Hell. Life on this earth, with all its mystery and beauty and pain, is then to be lived far more intensely: we stumble and get up, we are sad, confident, insecure, feel loneliness and joy and love. There is nothing more; but I want nothing more."

I haven`t been much on here either. I am doing good, last couple of months I have bought more books than I had time to read, I have developed a problem with passing a bookstore without buying a book or more. By the way, gratulations with the Nobel Piece Prize for Obama! I think it was a good decision. And now he will be visiting Oslo, Norway to receive the prize - it`s where I live. Hope I will have the chance to hear his speech live. When Mandela received the prize, I was there in the church listening to him, it was great. Take care

So, gratulations with your getting married! I am soon having my summer holiday, so then it will be reading time for me...at the sea or in the mountains. Take care.

Hello, so did you read "hunger"? And what´s your opinion? Did you dislike it? I have not yet received "sometimes", seems like they had to get it from abroad... Hope to hear from you:-)

I don´t know if you are interested in/into psychology, but check this book out, about living in our modern, complex world of today and how it affects our minds and bodies

I just remembered another norwegian book I think you might like. It´s written in the same period around early 1900, the story is about a young norwegian woman that struggles with the questions of independence, meaning, love and passion. She goes to Rome and becomes part of a bohemian/artist group of people, but keep striving with those crucial questions - she doesn`t want to just accept what the culture/society requires. It´s called "Jenny" by Sigrid Undset. Undset got the Nobel Prize of literature for a triology called "Kristin Lavransdatter". Well, "Sometimes" has not arrived yet, I am waiting.....

Are you a fast reader? Sometimes I am so slow, 100 pages could take a week. Other times it is different. Finally it´s the end of the week...tonight I´m going to see Nick Cave in concert:-)

Seems like Obama is the one person in the world people (and other politicians) refer to when they are discussing hopes for the future...even here. It´s kind of a joke here that every norwegian politician wants to be obama. The picture sure has changed from the last president:), don´t think anyone wanted to be his cousin...

Ha, I´m not living in the centre of the world... Someone told me that most (?) americans think that Norway is the capital of Sweden;-). But we are very "americanized" here actually, so I was surprised myself that they didn`t have Sometimes. By the way, I haven`t had the chance to congratulate any american with Obama, so that´s for you. He is fantastic, I think - I love his seriousness combined with that great sense of humour. I finally ordered Sometimes through a norwegian internet store - amazon charges a lot to send books! After what you told me, I have such great expectations for Sometimes, can´t wait to start reading, ;-)

I went to several bookstores today to look for "sometimes a great notion", but they didn`t have it. Not even in the "indie" store (are books "indie"?). That gave me a good feeling, so I bought another book instead:). So now I am going to buy sometimes throug Amazon, I think. You would probably like that indie-bookstore, they have a lot of different rare stuff, hole collection of obscure cartoons which I could like even if I don`t read them much and haven´t for many years

Read "Zen..." a few years ago, I liked it, but now I can´t quite remember that much... perhaps I have to read it again? Do you sometimes read books more than once? I like to, only some of course, this summer I will read "the idiot" (it`s the best:)) again, I think. Good to hear that you got some inspiration for the norwegian catalogue, hope you won´t be disappointed! But be honest, of course:-)

Sure I will let you know...I´ll try to catch the bookstore today if it doesn´t close early or anything, guess it takes me a week or something to struggle through those first confusing chapters... "Hunger" is great also because it´s from my city so I know those streets the main character is wandering and follow him around (but guess it doesn´t really make a difference)

You should be able to find some books of Knut Hamsun, either "Hunger" or "Mysteries", perhaps. My advice is to go for "Hunger", it`s about a young man wanting to be a writer, wandering the streets with nothing to eat but daydreaming, quite funny, actually. I hope I like that book of yours too, since I have to read more than 60 pages to find out;-)

Oh, I like the way you recommend a book! I will definitely go for `Sometimes a great notion`. Thanks for the warning about the first 60 pages. There is quite a chance that there will be a strike at my work from tomorrow, so then I get some extra free time to read:). So, have you read any books by norwegian writers? Hamsun, for instance? He is my favourite, created fantastic characters, the master of the unspoken - does that make sense? "Pan" is about this man that feels he doesnot belong in the "modern" world, he just can`t do and say the right things - he gets bitter, thinks he is "not good enough". And then he can`t believe to be loved, either... It`s written around 1890, I think.

Ha, I think it`s hard as well, to give a book less than three stars. But I find it easier if I compare books...compare with those I like the most. I thought about the Paulo Coelho-book the Alchymist which I didn´t like that much, compared with Siddharta (Hesse), that is really is one of my favourites. But I read the Alchymist in Spanish, perhaps that is why I didn`t like it - my spanish is not so good. John Fante is earlier than the beat writers, they are very much influenced by him, I think (and have read). And Bukowski is, and Salinger. Try "wait until spring, Bandini!" It`s quite sad. My Boise-friends name is David Leader, much older than you, so you probably don`t know him. He has been living in Norway for almost ten years now. If you have any modern/new american books that you especially recommend, let me know...

I noticed that you are from Boise - a friend of mine grew up there (I am from Oslo, Norway, he is living here now but I visited him once in Boise) but then I saw that you have been reading many of the books I like the most - but I question your ratings on some of them:-) Anyway, did you read anything from John Fante? I think you would love his writing, based on your comments (excuse my english, which can be pretty rotten or something)
