    Well, if I rate it too harshly, people will assume I hate my own work. It's hard to believe in an author that doesn't believe in himself. Conversely, if I rate it too high, then it looks like I'm just shilling the book, and makes me appear insincere.

    ...So the only option available to me is to provide a three-star rating, and I don't feel good about that. I like my work. It may not be the best writing in the world, and people may be hesitant to approach a novel written in the manner I use, but I don't want to spit on it just to maintain an acceptable public image. So I took the best option I could think of: declaring that I had no business rating my books.
