In my younger years, I was never really big on reading... in fact I have a hard time getting through a full newspaper article without being distracted. Luckily, I was forced to read in High School and I loved all the "required reading". Even books like "The Grapes of Wrath" seemed to hold my interest. In college I was "forced" to read a whole book in a weekend and I was able to struggle through it... probably because it was a great book!
Once I left college I rarely read.
Some time later friends of mine were avid readers and after hearing several book discussions I decided to join in and ended up reading many books, more then I have ever read. I devoured Tom Clancey novels, Stephen King horror stories and VC Andrews paperbacks just to name a few.
After joining the NYPD the reading slacked off. Long crazy hours and much overtime dominated my life. Then a move to Long Island and an hour and a half commute gave me the time to read. But reading behind the wheel of a car can be dangerous (although you do see some people in NY reading while driving!) so I scampered over the local library where I found tons of audio books. I would go through three a week. I loved it! I even talked several people at work who had long commutes to join in!
Once retired from the NYPD I landed a job in Manhattan and I continued to listen to audio books on the LIRR, the NYC subway and the long walk to the office.
Audio books serve me well since I have a hard time reading with any type of distractions. I waste no time during the day, weather it be car rides, bike rides, waiting on lines or shopping, I have my ipod clipped to my pocket and listening to a story.
And just one more thing... How great is Shelfari! It's a perfect fit for the avid reader and organizer!
