    Hi Carol,
I have been a slug of an on-line friend over the past few months. Have been on the road for work almost full time and am glad to have a quiet weekend at home. Haven't seen any posts since you got back from Hawaii. Was it fabulous? My favorite island is the Big Island. But every island we have been to was wonderful when you get in a car and get out of the main city. Did you love the rainbows and sunsets?

Where are you going next? We are going on a fun little 3 day cruise out of Port Canaveral with two other couples. Going to Bahamas. I have been there a couple of times, but it is really more about the cruise time than the destination.

I just finished The Dress Lodger. A dark book but very good. About a prostitute in England in the 1830s during the cholera epidemic. Strangely enough, I picked up an audio by Tess Gerritson, The Bone Garden. It is about the same time period but is set in Boston. Both books are centered around resurectionists, who dig up bodies so that doctors could study anatomy.

I enjoyed Kindness of Strangers alot. Read it for the GroupReads group here on Shelfari.

I moved into the digital age and bought an MP3 player to listen to books while at the gym. Our library now allows books to be downloaded. Unfortunately, you can only keep them for one week, and then they expire. (How do they do that?). You can only re-check them out again onto your computer if no one else wants the book. Most books are over 12 hours in length and I just can't get it done in 7 days, so I am hoping that I will be able to get the book again. Sure is nicer than lugging around CDs at the gym. (besides I feel "old and out of touch"!

I see you 4 starred Water for Elephants. I just couldn't get through that book. Everyone seems to love it though. Maybe I should try again.

What else is on your list?

I saw "Miss Pettigrew" and thought it was great fun. It was in my queue from the time I saw trailers.
I put your book recommendation ("Time Is a River") on my shelf. My daughter had high praise for "The Ginseng Hunter" -- I'm reading it now -- very promising.

    Hi Carol!

Ooh...have fun in Hawaii! I've only been once (December '98?) and was enchanted by all the rainbows.

I've been spending way too much time on Facebook, but it's fun -- like seeing the old gang at work/school again.

My granddaughter is reading the Stephenie Meyers books, so I've been reading them first (on book three) then sending them to her.

Two books I've recently read and loved: "The Road From Coorain" and "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society."

We started the the John Adams series, really liked it, then got sidetracked by other things. Will go back to it when we've gone through "Friday Night Lights".

We're taking a mini-vacation to Door County, Wisconsin in October. Never been there and I want to see what all the fuss is about. Our "Up North" is Michigan.

    Hi Carol,

Good to hear from you. Wish you a great trip to Hawaii. I used to go every second year for business and everytime we picked different islands or resorts. There are beautiful places to see and great food to eat. Can't wait to hear all about it when you get back...

Last night I didn't feel like reading the book I started this week so picked up Eat Pray Love again so i could finish it someday. Likewise, if I read something great I'll let you know.

    Keep in touch,
    Claire

Hi Carol, I haven't heard from you in a while and I was just about to log out when I saw you just coming on.

Hope you had a nice summer. Ours was quiet. We took little trips down the East Coast. We're going again this week. We're going sailing with some friends in Rhodes Island. We still haven't booked our trip to Europe for this fall nor the trip down south for this winter. It looks like we're going to go to the west coast of Florida but not sure where exactly for now.

Besides the latest Daniel Silva novel, I haven't read anything worth sharing... Sad ! How about you ? Anything you read that is interesting ?

Looking forward to hearing from you soon,

    Claire

    Carol,
We stayed at the Hilton on the Big Island as well!! It is a HUGE place and you get to your room via boats. May be a little TOO big.

I highly suggest you rent a car and explore the entire periphery of the island. The Kona coffee area is so much fun to see. The coasts are BEAUTIFUL. Then of course there is the active volcano.

We enjoyed the area with the ranches as well.

I am so jealous! We are going back next year I hope.

I am glad to try to get more specific if you want. We can talk on the phone if you need more info.

    Carol,
Sure hope you have read Mitchener's Hawaii prior to your trip! It's a whopper, but I learned so much about its history by reading that book prior to going to Hawaii. I finished his Alaska book and enjoyed it alot. It is especially interesting since the Palin nomination.

I am so jealous you are going to Hawaii. What a wonderful place! Which island(s) are you going to? We love the Big Island. Jim is saving our Hilton points to go for a week and take some friends. Probably next year.

Our next little trip is the Bahamas cruise from Port Canaveral. I have done it a couple of times but we are going with two sets of friends who have never cruised. We will have so much fun. Like you, I am dieting (forever dieting) to feel a little better about myself when I am on the cruise. Of course, all bets are off when I get on that ship.

It was good hearing from you. I always enjoy perusing your bookshelf for good ideas!

Let's hope Ike behaves out there!!!!!

You can't hide on Shelfari. I just noticed you were "active" 3 hours ago. Good grief. It is 6:48! What time do you get up!
Going for a walk in this tropical heat. Ugh. Already humid!
    Have a wonderful day today.

Hey there, Carol. I have finally gotten around to writing you back after your nice newsy letter. Your trip sounded fabulous, especially all the girl time. You must have taken the Evelyn Woods speed reading class! I don't know how else you can get thru so many books. I read a lot but usually at bedtime until I cannot keep my eyes open. I usually have one book on CD in the car, non-fiction, as well.
My husband & I had a blast in Fort Worth. We saw a great exhibit at the art museum, walked around & ate dinner downtown which is the "happening" place there with lots & lots going on. We did some touristy stuff, too, and got massages which was so nice. One of the best things was to be able to do what we wanted when we wanted, stop along the way, etc. without needing to deal with our kids. We love 'em, but it was like we were dating again. We brought a book on tape for the ride but didn't turn it on at all!
I finished Emma & really enjoyed it. Now I will see the Gwyneth Paltrow movie when it comes in. I just started Eat Pray Love for my book group & like it so far. I am also enjoying Ladies of Liberty on CD read by Cokie Roberts. If you like American history, read it. However, I think I will now have to read the prequel Founding Mothers. Those women were tough!
BTW, my friend saw your note on my page & recommended that you plant your fruit trees in an elevated bed. Good luck with those. I just noticed my new azaleas were terribly wilted & am watering them hoping I didn't lose them. We were planning for Gustav the last few days & didn't pay attention. I hope that the recent hurricanes have left you & yours safe. We lucked out with this one but had reservations further inland.
    Take care,
    Nancy

    Hi Carol!
I have been an awful on line friend lately, but have been doing some wonderful traveling, just like you! We got back from Alaska and Vancouver last week. Had a wonderful cruise and followup visit to Vancouver. My hubby and I travel so well togother. We always make fun out of everything and almost never argue when we are on the road. The glaceiers were incredible. Also went to a dog mushing camp and got wheeled around by a team. What fun!

Sounds like you liked Las Vegas! It has been a long time since I have been there and I know that the hotels are even bigger and glitzier now. Now that you have rested up - where is your next trip?

I went to Phoenix right after I got back last week, so I am still on a strange jet lag. So glad to have this three day weekend. Going to Denver the 9th but that will be a quick trip for business and I will basically only see the inside of a hotel!

Had a fair amount of reading time on the planes. I picked up an Elizabeth Berg book on the ship and fell in love with her writing. I am thinking you have a bunch of hers on your shelf? I will find more - that is for sure. Also read Fried Green Tomatoes and the Whistle Stop Cafe. Have never seen the movie and hadn't read the book, even though part of it is about fictional Valdosta, where I live. I now would like to see the movie.

I just picked up Elizabeth George's new book, Careless in Red. Have you read anything by her? She writes about British detectives and the characters are the same throughout her books. I have enjoyed them all, but always have to wait to get them from the library. I hate to buy books when they are sitting in the library for free!!

Wondering if Gustav or Faye caused any mess for you. They canceled school here and we closed our office for Faye. Lots of flooding. Looks like Gustav will leave us alone, but wondering about Hanna now. What a year this will be!

Hi Carol, Great to hear from you ! Glad you had a wonderful trip in Vegas. Those restaurants sound fabulous ! They are on my list of restaurants to try next time I'm in the area.

Good thing you did not get damages from the hurricanes. We just took a few days to travel down the East Coast (Boston, Cape Cod and Newport, RI). We followed the sun and did some shopping. I found beautiful cookware (at Le Creuset and Caphalon).

His youngest daughter is coming for an 8-day visit from Newfoundland. She'll arrive after Labor Day. She wants to go shopping in NYC...

I'm off work for a while so I'm enjoying the rest of the summer. I just received my latest Daniel Silva book (Moscow Rules) today. Can't wait to start reading it in the bath tub tonight.

Take care and keep in touch,

How was your trip? Was it all you hoped? It certainly sounded wonderful! My husband & I are going on a weekend trip. We will go to see an exhibit at an art museum (reason for trip, really) then have massages planned at a spa. Other than that, I am counting on continuing Emma (Austen) and room service! It will be the first time we have left our kids alone, both teens. We will listen to Cokie Roberts' Ladies of Liberty in the car.
On my shelf, I have Septembers of Shiraz which my mom cannot wait for me to read as well as some Jodi Picoults, The Space Between Us, Yiddish Policeman's Union, and Secrets of a Fire King. There are so many other ones I have I cannot name them all. I do not usually buy my books, but read what is lent or from the library. When I do buy, I usually buy used. I found a site that sells books with the profits going to help literacy projects around the world called www.BetterWorld.com.
Have you been watching the Olympics? It has been hard to turn them off! You mentioned your business. I do not remember what that is.
Hope all is well with you,
    Nancy

Carol- I don't know you well enough to know what your 'coming of age' was- but mine was centered around The Beatles and the Summer of Love and being a hippie. Across the Universe captured that so well- It was directed by Julie Taymor- Lion King Goddess! And it takes all the Beatle's music and weaves it into a musical- stories about a young girl- Lucy- who's boyfriend gets drafted and another boy Jude who comes to the US from England to find his dad- and all their stories- It was MASTERFUL- ( sorry- I can get carried away with the caps thing...) If any part of your young adulthood was tied up in that scene- or if you love the Beatles music- you owe it to yourself to watch it. Nuff said- Have a great time in Vegas!! Mary
