I've read the first 3 Sookie books, and they haven't really worked for me either. I think I'm probably going to stick to the show instead. My favorite series is the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. Like Twilight, Its a YA series, but less tame in terms of language and sexual content. Another series I love is the Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine, starting with Glass Houses. Again, its a YA series, but this one is a fast read and really entertaining. They have a element of mystery to them and are just enjoyable to get lost in. This next series isn' t strictly vampires, but it is one of the best I have read, The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare (City of Bones is the first). I always compare this series to something out of the Joss Whedon (Buffy, Firefly/Serenity) universe. Like Whedon's works, it has a wonderful mix of humor, action, romance, and genuinely interesting characters.

Hi, Nikki V - so good to see your name! Congrats on the new job - I know of several people looking for one, so you're lucky.

Yes, as far as Nora Roberts goes, I recommend her Chesapeake Bay series (I usually do when asked); there are four books in that series: Sea Swept, Rising Tides, Inner Harbor and Chesapeake Blue. I've loved them and have recommended them before and those people loved them, too.

Things are great with me; I'm back in MA with my family doing family things, and when the weather permits (which hasn't been many times lately) I work in the garden a bit. Still playing on this computer and reading, though, and that's a good thing.

Nikki - I finished The Lucky One night before last and just noticed your note asking me to comment on it. I loved it. See my review on my pages. One of my friends here loaned it to me, so I read it "out of order" to my Challenge books. An excellent story - and up until the last page I didn't really know how he would end it. I love that - clues are thrown here and there and you feel you know, but then ------. Sparks is a writer I'm never sure of; I've read two that I didn't care for - they each had a bit of "magic" in them, and to me weren't believable. That's just me - I really love fantasy but maybe I can't mix it with reality?? Don't know and haven't analyzed myself about it.

How are your "kiddies" doing? In reading your profile I see you and your hubby had the same years to wait as my husband and I did. However, now that he's gone and I'm lots older and all, wouldn't I love to have that 3.5 years back! Those years were precious, the times were so different than now, and he went into the Air Force. I wrote him just about EVERY DAY, can you believe it? He wrote me lots, but couldn't sometimes - he served in Japan for a year (Korean "campaign" - don't let anyone kid you, it was WAR) plus months and there were times I wouldn't hear for 3 weeks. Scary then. Oh, well, I ramble when it comes to memories. But that time frame triggered a memory for me. Thanks for it!

Hi, Nikki - Just began it in bed last night and felt too sleepy to continue beyond the first 10 pages or so. I've heard mixed things about it, but I've enjoyed most of his stuff so it's worth reading, I feel. Yep - I'll let you know if it's a worthwhile one. Good to see your name on a posting!

Hi - long time since we contacted; I hope things are alright with you and your hubby - and the pups! I noticed that you've read Nicholas Sparks' The Lucky One and wondered how you liked it. Somehow, it seems I've read it but I almost know I didn't. Maybe the synopsis is what makes me think that; I may have seen that in a newspaper and now it's familiar. Before I joined Shelfari I didn't keep any track of what I read - and it's been thousands of books, most of which I've forgotten. Once in a while someone on Shelfari will mention a book and it clicks so I can add it to my shelf. And a few of Sparks' have turned out to only be "okay" for me - although a few are excellent.

Very good Thanksgiving, lots to be thankful for; especially when we got news of two people (not relatives) with dire news. That's so hard around holidays. I was gifted with a lovely bedspread (daybed size) that is quilted (sewing machine, not hand-done, tho) by my sister-in-law. Amazing piece. And I added about 35 books to my shelves, bought about 10 more (used and new)
and it's almost time to start the Winter Challenge for Readers of Romance. For my November Challenge I went conservative and thought I could read 6; I am about to finish #15 tonight. Don't know if I can read one in one day (tomorrow being the 30th) but maybe I'll try.

Oh, and by the way - no, don't cook until Christmas!!

Yes; drove to in-laws (I'm widowed and my kids are all in the north) about 70 miles south, and food was great. The best thing is that they said, "We'll never cook at home again; next year, a restaurant." Stayed two nights, home now and loving to be alone again! Long story.
    Was your holiday nice?
We have so much to be thankful for in this country, in spite of some awrful stuff.

We had a Red Hat event that day and I'd tried to take a pic in my red/purple things but it came out awful. This one (took it of myself) isn't quite so bad. But I'm too serious in it, I think. And that fat face, ugh. Too much licorice, etc., but that's me and I'm stuck with me.

Hey - you changed your picture/avatar, whatever! I don't know how to do that - can't even find a pic I want to post. There's one somewhere in the family that I had done professionally a few years ago that's only of me, and not too bad. I've hundreds here on my computer and on a digital frame I've got, but all those with me in them have others, too. My husband's gone and it just doesn't do it to have a picture with anyone else! Crazy? So the little blue thing stays for now.

Like yours, though - nice looking couple you make.

Thanks so much for telling me it's sad. I'll wait - but it's funny - the book I decided to read now is about the Twin Towers disaster!! Can you imagine? But so far, I've been able to handle ti - it's a Christian novel (don't often read those) and the woman who wrote it is focusing on two families' situation through those trying times. So far, I've been mesmerized, couldn't put it down until I absolutely had to (2 am). It's 2 books together, so we'll see how it all goes. But as for the one I asked you about, I will definitely wait a bit.

I've often felt the urge to get A Boy Called "It". You apparently have read it. Was it a good book? A hopeful story - or was it a "down-in-the-dumps" one? I've needed an uplifting story for about a week, since I saw an upsetting movie!

Oh - just noticed you asked me if I found Murder Most Royal. No, I didn't. Paperback Swap didn't list it, and my bookstore didn't have it in, either. But that's okay; I'll pick it up eventually. I have three books coming in the mail from PBS soon.
