I am the librarian/media specialist in the Sayre Area Jr.-Sr. High School. I enjoy reading young adult literature mostly because I like to be able to recommend books to my students. I do also tend to read a lot of historical books due to my background in history.

I listened to the audio and it was well done (Tool's voice is not what I would think from reading Ship Breaker, but I dealt). My review: For me, not as good as Ship Breaker but very well written. Bacigalupi is a master of world building and the reality of this world is just so engrossing. Mahlia, the main character, is a strong and independent. However, this is a dark and sad world that doesn't have the optimism that Ship Breaker had. The war being fought effects everyone everywhere and young people are being swept up into militia and handed guns. If you are not a fan of relaistic war scenes then this story may be too much. It was great to learn more about Tool, he is a fantastic and well-developed character. I was hoping for details about the genetic experiments that brought Tool into the world, but there was none of that in this book. It is an interesting companion to Ship Breaker, but a book that would be hard for me to recommend to others. As a stand alone I might have gave it 3 stars, but because I love Ship Breaker, I rounded to 4 stars...

That was good information without spoiling anything. I just read Article 5 (new dystopian) that started out great, then went bleh and cliffhanged at the end. I feel like this is a pattern in YA and I'm really tired of having to wait for sequels. I feel like the author draws out the storyline and kills the pace because they are saving material for the next book. Many thanks :-)
