    Hi Michael,
I've been browsing your shelf and was interested to read your comments about Cormier. Which books turned you off? I loved both The Chocolate War and Beyond the Chocolate War, but haven't been able to settle into any of his books since. Maybe I'll give The Rag and Bone Shop a try...
And you're a James Patterson fan? I've had mixed feelings about his books but did really enjoy Swimsuit (I think that was the title). Your shelf is an interesting mix for me :)
I've really wanted to read the Catherine Jinx books. My eldest loved some of hers a few years back - the genius wars - and I tried The parent trap but just couldn't get into it. (I should explain at this point that I'm not a particularly patient reader and if a book can't hijack my life in a chapter - two at most - then it hits the slush pile!)
Would love to be shelfari friends if that's ok and follow your reading?
I'm in Christchurch NZ and Mum to two boys, aged 16 and nearly 12, both keen readers.
    Fiona :)

I too love Shusterman. Do you miss the Florida school system? Do you miss the weather? What other authors are you fond of?

The Rag and Bone Shop was the first book that made me angry. I also had read other Cormier books, but was unimpressed until I read this one. It is an incredible read and when I express my anger about circumstances in the book, my students want to read it, too. Another book that caused such intense emotion was Jude by Kate Mogenstern (spelling?). Have you read it? Highly recommended.

"Madman in the Mirror" is a story about a man - Henry Johnson - who is raised by a psychopath and forced to watch - even as a baby - his father murder people on a regular basis. He is also abused and brainwashed, turning him into a sociopath. Henry stalks and murders people efficiently - he tells himself that he may be a killer, but he doesn't want people to suffer. He is haunted by hallucinations, including a specter in his mirror that talks to him.

“A.J. is a master at creating word images that remain with the reader long after the book is finished.” Richard S. Friedman

Murder, romance and the paranormal. It is sprinkled with humor. Also contains ghosts, a dog that’s adopted by Henry and a crazy hooded merganser duck. And a baby as his arch enemy.

“It held me spellbound and at attention all through the story.” “Fascinating peek in the mind of a serial killer.” “A most imaginative and brilliant book.”

That is so cool. I live in Sarasota, but teach in Bradenton at Johnson Middle School. We are an IB school. I teach 6th grade Language Arts. I hold a certificate in Elem. Ed. and In English 6-12. The only thing I enjoy more than teaching is reading and writing.
