Thanks for thinking of me Leigh:-)
I'll see if his books are available here.
I read Zoo City a while back and thought it was interesting. Have you read it? Not my usual genre but it was pretty good.

I can definitely see where that can happen. We have that in a small scale with everyone coming up from Latin America, and mainly doing jobs that no one wanted here anyway but it has become a big issue anyway, here a lot of time they are not paying taxes etc. I say let them work, but if they want to be here pay the taxes like everyone else.

I guess in Africa, you also have so many different ethnic groups within the black population, and so many different countries within the continent all with their own religions or belief systems. No wonder there is so much strife.

That is terrible, a pecking order within their own race. I guess that goes on everywhere in the world. Someone always has to feel superior. Human nature??

Or I should have said like the blacks here from the days of slavery as well.

I will have to check out the book you are mentioning. It was kind of hard to see how the blacks were treated by the whites, back in the 30's-50's and in a lot of places it doesn't seem to have changed much, Kind of like the American indians, now living mainly on reservations here in the USA.

Leigh I just finished and reviewed the book. I liked it very much, but there were just a few parts towards the end, talking about politics etc that felt a bit long, but I found him to be a very honest and descriptive writer. (almost to the point where one had to really concentrate on the words or you would miss the point) ;-} at east for me. thank you again.

Good, I am glad you got them and are making room. ;-} Mine are double layers on each shelf, i understand what you are going through. I just reviewed the book on Africa I was reading, it was good. Sometimes I felt the wording was a bit repetitive, but it sounded maybe like these kids may have talked.

How could you resist, that would have been crazy!!! I think get a bigger house and keep buying :-]
I also went yesterday with a couple of bags of books I had finished to a used book store, where they give you a certain amount for your books and then I usually just buy back from them that day. I got a credit for 63$ and bought 9 books with 8.50$ left over for next time on a credit slip. It is an easy way to never exchange money.

any book sales this weekend? I have been busy downloading free kindle books, and am reading one on Africa right now called "Nightmare Along the River Nile": Abducted by Kony A Story of Twentieth Century Slavery by Suzanna E. Nelson I know it will be sad and pretty heavy in theme.

I am well thank you Leigh, I took a couple of your books from your shelf for my wish list the other day. How fun to have been able to get so many books, if you are like me it feels like a "high" ;-} I can't wait to see what you think of "The West Rand Jive Cats Boxing Club" by Lauren Liebenberg. I have been satisfying a lot of my urges to buy, by downloading tons of free e-books, and there have been a fair number of ones on Africa. It is so hard to know what to read next. I am almost finished with a book called "Sorry" by Gail Jones, she is an Australian author and writes beautifully and descriptively like a lot of the African stories. "Sorry is very haunting and has a lot of interestingly tortured characters, I think you would really appreciate the writing and story line. I hope you had a good Birthday!! Happy reading and I can't wait to see what you put on your shelf.

I know what you mean about media portrayals, especially of Africa. Makes me kind of ill even thinking about it.

I'll check out Peter Godwin. Hope you enjoy Alexandra Fuller. I really admired Don't Lets Go for the way she told her story very directly and without self-pity.
