What I love best about books is that they are unchanging. In a world where everything around us and within us is renewed, restored, or destroyed each day, the characters in a our favorite books remain an anchor. I can open that book and know that even though I am different, they are the same. I can learn new things from them because I have a... more »

I completely agree with your review of Mockingjay. I gave it 5 stars more for the entire series than the book itself. I found the way she wrote about the war confusing but the ending redeemed the book. I hate how books are marketed for young adult just because the main character is a teenager.

Yeah, I like how you can scan a book to find out more about it on the Goodreads App.

That was interesting and I do think schools can sometimes kill the desire to read for enjoyment. I guess, as always, that is up to the parents to instill the love of reading in their children. Anne and I are working on the Magic Tree House series. They are really cute little chapter books. We are also reading the companion books that educates them about the subjects discussed in the books.

I don’t think either of us has to worry about having children that enjoy reading. I just can’t wait for Anne to be able to read by herself. The other day she read Go Dog Go all by herself. Now, that is mostly a sight word book but she did it! It is wonderful!

I just read your review of The Calling. I was a little confused too. I am torn, having come across so many series after they have been out awhile, I really hate the recap because when you get to read the entire series one after the other you do not need it. But, now that I have to wait a year for the next in a series to be released, I might become a fan of the recap. That being said, I never need Charlaine Harris to tell me that Bubba the vampire was Elvis.

And I have explained to Anne the consequences that might occur if she were to curse in front of her friends. I told her that parents may not want their children to play with her if she is using bad language. So far so good. I am keeping my fingers crossed that she keeps her mouth clean because I will have a real hard time giving up the “a” word.

I don’t always think about the violence and images that are in movies. Because I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark when I was little, I decided that Anne could watch it, after the first scene she was like Mom turn it off. There were so many dead bodies in the opening scene that I had completely forgotten about. At least I have shielded her enough from those images that she knows that she doesn’t want to see them.

Of course, she will end up being a sailor with my potty mouth. But that is another issue I believe so many people put too much emphasis on. Don’t get me wrong, I do not want her walking around cursing, but seriously if you say damn or dang you are still cursing. We have just made certain words worse than others. I have to remind her all the time not to repeat what I say.

Just another side note about our society’s obsession to witness horrors. Tonight I was driving home and there was an accident. There were police cars and ambulances and of course everyone was doing the slow drive by to gawk and stare. Sometimes I wonder am I in the wrong because I try not to look at things like that. I feel like they need their privacy in times like that, and unless I can do something to help I need to move along.

I just won another ARC. Of course, I think me winning these books is keeping me from winning my dream house and the lottery. LOL, I am using all my luck to win books. In a way it is fitting.

If I remember correctly Divergent was probably a lot more violent. At least the scenes felt more descriptive about the violence. The spectator aspect is definitely what is the most sickening part of the whole thing. To sit and watch someone be killed is heinous. Think about how people use to go and watch executions. Seriously, what is it about the human personality that makes people want to witness death?

Advanced Readers Copy. Even though I do not think it was a new book, I think it was just a rerelease.

As far as the Hunger Games, I can see why you are disturbed. I always say that a good dystopian novel is based in a truth that the reader can recognize. I can’t imagine a society that would do that to kids, but I can certainly see us as a society that would watch something like that with adults. Think of Survivor. I loved the Hunger Games for that reason, because it is a jumping point for discussing our obsession with violence as a culture. Kelley Armstrong said something recently that I think speaks volumes about our culture. “Someday, in asking about giving my adult books to young readers, someone will be concerned about the violence, not the sex. Someday. . .” That statement, for me, represents so much about what is wrong with our society. Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t want Anne reading about sex any time soon, but if it came down to it I would want her to read a book that had people making love in it over killing one another any day. I have heard so many people complain about Breaking Dawn because it had a sex scene in it. Well, there are a lot more things to be concerned about your young kid watching than a young married couple having sex for the first time. We rarely think about the violence we let our kids watch and participate in (via video games), yet we get totally freaked out about a nipple being exposed by accident at the super bowl. Look how freaked out everyone gets over a mother breast feeding her child. Yet, how many people are murdered on tv every night?

With that tirade finished (mind, I could go on and on and on . . .), you have to finish the series. I will tell you that, in my opinion, the books go down in quality. Or at least the third is my least favorite. It seemed chaotic to me, but it may need to be revisited. I loved the series, and I have hated how the clones out there have tried to make this a love triangle story because it is so much more. I always look forward to your opinion.

Hey, starting the 29th, there is a online YA scavenger hunt. I know you may not have much time to mess with it, but I thought you might want to know about it. Here is the link. http://yascavengerhunt.blogspot.com/p/enter-here.html

Yeah, Kim Harrison has quite a few books so I was hoping that I would be as enamored with her writing as I was with Kelley Armstrong. No comparison, at all. I don’t know if the first book is just slow because it is world building or if it is just a dull book. I couldn’t get into Jim Butcher either. It is due back tomorrow so I guess I will just scratch Dead Witch Walking off my list. The Marriage Plot won the Pulitzer so I will give it one more try.

I do not know if it is me or the books, but I can not get through one of the ones I have started. Dead Witch Walking, blah. . . The Returners . . .double blah . . .The Marriage Plot( I won’t say blah yet because I am only a chapter into it) but I haven’t picked it up since the other night. I haven’t started Follow the River yet but I hope it captures my attention quickly because I start getting the hives when I do not have a good book to entertain me.

Thanks. I will check into it. Isn’t it funny what parents will tell you to read or watch? Back when I was 18 or 19 my mother told me to watch Deliverance. If you have seen it then you will know why I was like “thanks for the recommendation Mom”.

I don’t know if I can lend the book to you or not since I am on the nook. We could always try. I know they will probably make an appearance in the last book but I will miss them greatly. I have liked the other books and characters but I love Clay and Elena. She has a new series she is getting ready to start and I do love her teen series, but I know how you feel.

I wasn’t excited about seeing it either. The only reason I saw it opening weekend was because Traci was taking her daughter and friends to see it. Otherwise, I may not have seen it so quickly either. And the first ten minutes of the movie I was cringing in my seat thinking “why am I here?” Then, it got better and I left the theater happy with the movie. I do think the producers of these movies made a big mistake releasing Eclipse 6 months after New Moon then waiting a year and a half for Breaking Dawn. Pacing them a year apart kept our interest peaked. A year and a half from Eclipse to the first Breaking Dawn was just too long a wait. I have read too many books I like as well if not more. Right now I am more excited about The Hunger Games movie than the next Breaking Dawn Movie. Timing is everything.

I saw it this past weekend. The first 10 minutes of the movie I was thinking “What am I doing here?” Then it got better and I left the theater very happy.

I am really enjoying the Game of Thrones as well. I love Tyrion. I haven’t gotten obsessed with it the way I did with Jamie and Claire. Of course, I haven’t fallen in love with anyone in Game of Thrones.
