OK, been away from Shelfari for quite a while... time to update my bio, I think.
Hi there, I'm Katy, and I live in New Zealand.
As a child, I was always been signifiantly more interested in a literary fictional world than the actual world around me - I would read LOTS. At one stage I can recall standing in the library's childrens section, and despairingly saying, "There's nothing left I haven't read!" Of course that was rather a hyperbolic statement, and there were some books I hadn't read, but not ones which interested me. So, into adult fiction I ventured. From here my interest in different genres exploded, from Orwellian dystopian political commentary to Scott-Card's brilliant and intellectually challenging
Ender series, to Jodi Picoult's drama and emotion, to biographies, fantasy, historical fiction, classics, soppy teen lit, adventure, mystery...... These days there's almost nothing I'm not prepared to try - just don't hit me with a Western or horror, because I will hit you back.
Now, immersed in my studies, I find very little time for reading that isn't required in a thesis. Whenever I find myself most tense or anxious, or over-wound about something or other, I realise it's because I haven't read anything recently. Reading is therapy, it's relaxation incarnate. I'm always looking for something new that will challenge me and satisfy whatever particualr mood I'm in, but I am known for reverting back to old and much-loved favourites. My copy of
The Book Thief is well-thumbed and worn around the corners for sure.
Amongst my other interests range a variety of things - most recently, Steampunk. Anything neo-Victorian pretty well fits into this category in my mind; in order to costume for this new hobby, I've also taught myself how to make a corset. Sewing is anothing thing I've picked up, after I received a sewing machine from my parents (obviously hopeful in the postential of having a personal seamstress in the house). I've always been very keen on writing; a lack of input or constructive attention caused a period of discouragement for a year or so when I was 13, but I soon picked it up again, and filled drawers with countless sheafs of paper. Two novels have begun to take shape in the front of large, impressive leather-bound tomes, but invariably at the 80-page mark they withered in the face of an onslaught of frantic work or exams. My short stories have been more successful. In addition I became interested in screenwriting with the influence of a friend, but I have yet to finish (let alone film) one.
Musically I'm fairly diverse, similarly to my reading tastes - first one genre, then another and another began to grace my ears with some frequency. If I had to give you my top 5 bands/artists it would be barely scratching the surface, but I'm going to go for Fall Out Boy, Evanescence, Pendulum, Beethoven (I know, a bit out-of-place, but he's my absolute favourite, along with Mozart!), and Lady Antebellum.
Finally, as a New Zealander, after winning the World Cup two weeks ago in our own country, I am absolutely insane about rugby. My current devotion is coating my room with All Blacks posters; I can't wait for the Super 15 to kick off in February, since my home team (the Auckland Blues) have the World Cup IRB Player of the Year shortlist within their ranks! I was so incredibly proud when the boys finally brought home the Webb Ellis Cup and have been following all my favourite players on Twitter and Facebook fanatically. Bring on the Cup in 2015! :D
1447 characters remaining. Hmm. I think that's about enough about me, to be honest. I should add, however, one very, very important point: I love kitties. :)
