    Hi Jennifer… :D

Thank you so much for your kind words.

And yes Heinlein is an author I believe every writer should read.
He is a bit hard to nail down however. For on the hand, he writes deceptively clever story lines, nearly always ‘showing’ not ‘telling’ yet, he is at times kinda chauvinistic: even though, some of his strongest, most capable characters are women. He is not shy of jumping into politics (I am not a follower of his ideas there) His most fascist book is ‘Starship Troopers’, and his most liberal, ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’. Ironically both were written at the same time, though Stranger was published 4 years later.

He uses vivid and unusual settings, yet plays them off as every day ordinary stuff. One thing for sure, you will never know where you are headed—it can and does change in an instant.

The best ones to start with would be any of his juvenile novels (most written between 30’s and 50’s say, ‘the Rolling Stones’ perhaps) or one of his later works: ‘The Cat Who Walked Through Walls’, for instance, has most of his eccentricities all rolled up into one :D But then I suppose ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’ is a good one to start with also. Job and The Number of the Beast, would not be the right ones to start with. Too out-there.

    :D see ya…

Welcome to the Good Reads group, Jennifer.

We are glad you chose to join us and we want to encourage you to participate in the discussion of the group read for the month of November, Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin. Or, you might want to participate in our discussion for December. Denizen has compiled a list of books nominated in 2009 but not selected; we hope members of the group will review or comment on them. We would like to know what you think.

The group profile should give you an idea of how the group works and it includes a list of the books we have read. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a note.

I have read Rabbit Run. I was at a meeting at another school district, and their adult literacy campaign was having a book sale outside the district office--all books for a quarter a piece. I bought a bunch of them and had to find one to read until yours came. I probably should have read them in order, but this is the one I had. So far, I like it, but I have just started. I have been pretty busy and do not seem to be reading or writing as much. Last night I read Puffin Circus #2 because my copy came in the mail. I was pumped that I actually got some ink on the cover!

Jennifer, you have no idea how much that means to me. Thank you. I hope you are right! I really thought I had something, but it took me a long time to figure out how to do it--a good editor might have made it even better . . . I am going to eventually send you Ch. 1 of the sequel. I know you have your own work to do, but I think I wrote this well, and I am hoping I have something. Even if I don't, I tried, and your kind words are much appreciated.

I will. I am about 2/3 of the way through, and so far I like it. However, she seems to be putzing around getting to the main point, and I am starting to get a little anxious to see where she is actually taking this. As usual, we males are getting pounded over the head with a lead pipe pretty frequently . . . I would say that overall, it is good.

    Hi Jennifer
I received and started Musical Chairs yesterday. I love a book that grabs me right from the start, and yours certainly did that! I fell asleep with it still in my hands last night. I'll keep you posted...

Great. Hope you like it. I just responded to your blog on Author's Den. I got paid today. I am thinking that I will be ordering yours around the end of next week. Going to see Bob tomorrow night. I have my idea for my next book, but I need to find the time to write. Too busy trying to sell this one! I haven't picked up on my short story for a couple days. Having to collect a paycheck is hell. Maybe someday I can live my life the way I want . . .

Thanks so much for the link to the New Yorker podcasts. There's something to be said about listening to a story read aloud. Brings back fond memories... I've picked up Speak, Memory by Nabokov a few times but never bought it because I'm mostly into fiction but I will definitely check it out now. That story reads more like fiction than non-fiction.
