    McSnakey is an awesome name!!!!
Technically, the snake is Dominic's, but something tells me Stripes (named by Dominic) will be with Krista and I for a long time given the avg. lifespan of a ball python (20 to 40 yrs.). She (although we don't actually know the gender) came from the pet store down the street from us--we got her over a year ago and she's incredibly docile (unless she's socializing with mice). I've always liked snakes a lot (a friend of mind had one when I was in junior high), but never had one myself. Do you have any plans to get another one? I have also been amazed at how ignorant and/or irrational people are over them--they really are a polarizing species and they're so exotic/unusual (the dog and cats don't even notice the snake--it's like they don't see it as something alive--is that because it's cold blooded? do they not give off any scent?). The guy who runs the pet store had these enormous (like as big as an adult human calf or thigh muscle) boa constrictors in the store and he eventually had to move them to the back of the store because people were so scared of them--then he kept them in the back room and eventually just kept them at his house.

I'm just about to finish up chapter 8 in Wind-up...

Sounds like I have a shot at catching up! Haven't read any Tolstoy yet, but he's on the list (yes, the same one I'll take to my deathbed 80% unfinished)--glad to hear you are enjoying his work. Kittens can be a menace--like babies, it is very often only their cuteness that prevents their untimely demise... Speaking of pets, I'm outside right now, waiting for the flea bomb to finish in the house--cats are in the carriers in the car, loyal dog by my side (the cats are becoming so costly, I really only care for the dog and the snake at this point... prior to Dominic I might have considered myself a lifelong cat owner).

Weekend was OK--we did go see Beverly Hills Chihuahua--it's got Oscars written all over it!!! Actually, I found it pretty entertaining.

Happy Tolstoying--I'll let you know when I get up to chapter 8 in Wind-up.

How's life with the kitten? Does he have a name?
Started Windup Bird this weekend--how many chapters do I need to go to catch up to you (if that's even possible)?

    Hope your weekend was good,

If I ever meet Stephen King, I'm going to beat him about the face and neck with his own shoes for the shit he pulled at the end of the 6th book. I need a breather between 6 and 7, the final book. I'm filling the space with Evelyn Waugh.

Hi Jamie! I noticed your Potty Training Book as being added to your shelf. Thank you for reminding me that not all reading is escapism, seriously.
As for potty training, good luck to you. Been there three times, one girl, 2 boys.
Funny story: My third child, a boy, was almost 3 before he was potty trained. Stubborn, stubborn, stubborn...I was reduced to bribing him with M & Ms. I would say one M & M if you go potty.
The last bribe came after he asked for two!!!
Anyway, I'm sure you will or have heard all the horror stories, so I thought I'd get an amusing one in there for you.
    Take care...

I believe I fell down the steps with Dominic the day we got home with him. Luckily, he landed on my chest and we only slid down 3 or 4 carpeted steps. He was scared but otherwise unharmed (right, when he's incarcerated at age 17 as a homicidal maniac, I'm sure it will be tied to the brain damage he suffered as an infant)...

Sounds like everyone is doing well--glad to hear it. I'm not even going to tell you how I'm doing [sticking my tongue out in disdain now], but Krista and Dominic are doing pretty well. We're currently battling fleas--fun times!

I should be done Parable in another day or two, and then I'll start the Murakami. Glad to hear you're enjoying Anna Karenina.

    How was the weekend?

Thank you for the friend invitation. I gratefully accept. I browsed your shelves, too, and we have a few books in common and quite a variety they are!
I will send an invite to the group if you haven't already joined. It is easy to get involved. I try to limit my groups because it is really time-consuming to keep up with them, but I enjoy them a lot. I usually check them out first before I accept an invitation.
    Welcome again. Happy reading!

Well, with that profile, I know I've come to the right place!

Good morning! I am a member of the group Words/Quotes. We have a discussion called “Oxymorons”. A member posted ‘new classic’ as an oxymoron. Another member posted this response: “Now actually, I'm not sure I agree. In my fun student group and the ones for classes we've often debated about what makes something a "classic" vs. "fiction". Does something have to be old to be classic? Was Wuthering Heights a classic in its time? Catcher in the Rye was hailed as a new classic instantly...and here I am teaching it 60 years later."

So we asked her to start a new discussion which is: “My reward for posting a tangential comment…”

"Is it an oxymoron? I have had discussions in other groups and with students about what possible new classics are. When Catcher in the Rye came out, it was lauded as a classic immediately, and here I am teaching it 60+ years later. Does something have to be old to be classic?"

The discussion continues from that point. If you are interested or can answer our question regarding ‘new classic’ and/or what is a classic, please look up this discussion on our group. We would sure appreciate it! Thank you.

Haven't read any Murakami yet (other than a short story or two... maybe... ), so I'm looking forward to it--Krista read it and was pretty darn impressed, so we'll see. Gonna finish up one or two other reads I'm in the middle of first (shouldn't take but another week--maybe less as I just remembered I've got major reading time coming to me tomorrow--yay!!!).

I don't know what it's like in your household, but after Dominic was born, going to "work" was and still is the easiest part of my day. Never rule out sabotage ("the baby must have smeared that jelly on your racquet handle... I'm so sorry, honey... ").

What a weight you shall feel lifted after you have finished The Idiot--trust me!

Are you just starting the Windup Bird Chronicle? We don't necessarily have to start a formal discussion of it, but it's in line to be one of my next 5 reads--haven't decided whether to bump it up the list or not...

I only just finished Chapter 10 of Part Excruciato. I'll comment today and then read through to the end. If it is as interesting as you and Marc promise, this should be no problem for me. I'm good with that.

    1. You need to start a Shelfari for Jacob post haste, because I've sent him so many books, I need to be sure I don't repeat them.

    2. Andy joined Shelfari and still hasn't become my friend so I can harrass him in a friendly way.

    3. I can't wait to see you! I think the answer is finding out where all the NASA rocket scientists hang out. There's gotta be some wickedly geeky bar out there.

I'm on the 3rd Dark Tower book, and I really like it. The 2nd one was a bit weird, but it was interesting towards the end. Now that I'm about half-way through the 3rd, I'm glad I stuck through the 2nd book, because I really see where King was going with this.

For me, they're extremely quick reads, and they're good, "brain candy" fantasy--not a whole lot of nutrition here, but there's a lot of quick energy.

Let me know what you think of _The Waiting Years_. No one yet has been disappointed!
